Williamsburg, Va. - Behind a second-place finish from senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) and a third-place tie from freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.), the University of Maryland men's golf team recorded its best result of the spring season with a fourth-place finish at the Colonial Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club. The Terps shot their best round of the spring season, a three-over-par 291, in the second and final round to finish nine strokes behind team champion Elon. The Terps' total of 591 (+15) stood six shots behind second-place William & Mary (585) and two back of third-place James Madison (589).
Brigham nearly claimed his first victory of the year with a two-under-par score of 142. His second-round, three-under-par 69, his second spring round in the 60s, pulled him to within one shot of individual winner Adam Holman of William & Mary. The third-year transfer from Baylor has a streak of five consecutive rounds at 73 or better.
MacWhinnie's third-place tie with Elon's Andrew Koenig at 143 was his best collegiate finish, besting an eighth-place result at the Temple Invitational in the fall. Rounds of 71 and 72 gave MacWhinnie a one-under-par total, marking the first sub-par tournament of his collegiate career.
Competing individually, senior Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.) carded a second straight two-over-par score of 74 and tied for 14th. He recorded the best finish of any individual-only competitor. Sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) improved 13 places by shooting a second-round 73 that left him in a tie for 25th. Junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) and senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) finished in a 48th-place tie at 156.
The Terps' next tournament is April 8-9 at the Liberty Spring Golf Classic in South Mountain Lake, Va.
