COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Terps Head to Daytona Beach for Spring Fling
Coming off two top-10 finishes in the fall season and four strokes away from a top-10 finish in last week's Edwin Watts/Carolina's Classic, the Terps' women's golf team will head to Dayton Beach, Fla. to compete in Stetson University's Hatter Spring Fling, March 16-17.
Terps finish Edwin watts/Carolina's Classic in 11th place
Led by Kristen Shew and Marie Harper, the Terps finished in 11th place in their first showing of the spring at the Edwin Watts/Carolina's Classic. Shew's two day total was a 156, with a first day 83 and a second day 73 leaving her 12-over par and ending the weekend tied for 21st place. The team finished in 11th place out of a field of 22 teams.
After the first round of play, the Terps were tied for 15th place. "I felt we got off to a good start for the spring season," said head coach Jason Rodenhaver. "We showed opening day jitters in the first round but we rebounded for one of the low rounds of the day in round two."
The Terps edged tournament hosts College of Charleston by three strokes and were within striking distance (four strokes) of their first top 10 finish of the semester, and third of the year.
Terps At A Glance
Head coach Jason Rodenhaver, who built the women's golf program from the ground up in 1999, has seen his squad steadily improve since its inception at Maryland three years ago. The Terps look to continue their success this spring with the return of eight letterwinners and the arrival of one outstanding freshman.
Freshman Kristen Shew had the best round of her collegiate career last week, carding a 73 (+1) in the second round of the tournament. "Kristen Shew has worked hard in the off season and has put in the extra work in the beginning of our spring season," said coach Jason Rodenhaver. "It's good for her to get a low round under her belt. Hopefully, it will carry on throughout the spring."
The most consistent Terp last fall was Marie Harper, who posted a 78.6 stroke average across four tournaments. The Terps will be returning to the site of her best finish, a sixth-place tying 152 (78-74), which helped the Terrapins to the first-ever tournament championship in program history at the James Madison Lady Dukes Invitational.
Junior captain Erin Clasper, sophomore Katie Redeker, sophomore Kara Gropler and junior also return after making solid contributions in the fall.
