Men's Golf Wraps Up Regular Season At Rutherford Intercollegiate

April 22, 2002

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapin men's golf team looks to solidify its standing at the top of District II at the April 27-28 Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course in State College, Pa. The Terps are part of a regional field consisting of 11 District II competitors, as well as national top 100-caliber teams UNC-Wilmington, Ohio and Western Kentucky.

  • At Penn State's home course, the Terps are looking to avenge two head-to-head losses to the Nittany Lions in the fall. Penn State holds a five-stroke advantage over Maryland after finishing ahead of the Terps at the JMU Invitational and the Tillinghast Invitational. Overall, the Terps are 66-5 against District II competitors in 2001-02.

Terps Take Eighth Place At ACC Championship

  • The Terps matched their best score of the season in the final round, but had to settle for eighth place at the 49th annual ACC Championship April 19-21. No. 1-ranked Georgia Tech led the conference field wire-to-wire to win its second straight ACC title and gain the conference's automatic NCAA Championship bid at 27-under 837.
  • Maryland's 11-over-par total of 875 was its best ACC score since the 1998 team also totaled 875. The Terps' three-under-par third round of 285 matched the final round of the Wofford Invitational for the team's best score of the year, but against a conference field boasting seven of Golfstat's top 50 teams, the Terps took eighth for the second time in three years.
  • In his third and final ACC Championship, senior Corey Brigham recorded his best career score and finish in the championship with a total of 214 that tied for 15th. He finished with a two-under-par score for the third time in four tournaments. He has under-par finishes in four of six spring tournaments and in seven of 11 on the year.
  • Freshman Bobby MacWhinnie joined Brigham in giving the Terps their first round of the spring with two individuals scoring in the 60s by shooting a three-under 69 in the third round. On the strength of his first career round in the 60s, MacWhinnie finished his first ACC Championship with a two-over total of 218 and tied for 23rd along with junior John Moheyer, who claimed his first top-25 finish in the spring.

    Terps At A Glance

  • In each of its spring tournaments, Maryland has recorded its best score in the final round. The Terps have averaged three-over-par in their final rounds compared to 12.67-over-par in all other rounds.
  • According to Golfstat's April 17 individual ratings, Brigham is the top golfer in District II and 12th in the ACC with a 72.226 adjusted average. In Golfweek's April 18 individual standings, Brigham is the top-ranked golfer in District II and 18th in the ACC with a rating of 72.28.
  • The top four teams in District II stand to gain selection to the NCAA Championship. The Terps, ranked first in the district in Golfstat's rankings and second in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, will find out where they will play in the postseason when regional pairings are announced May 6.
