COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Duke baseball team captured a rain-shortened 10-8 victory over Maryland Sunday afternoon after inclement weather forced the game to be called after six innings of play. Sunday's game was originally scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., but heavy rain forced the contest to start at 4 p.m. and both teams played for two hours before the inclement weather hit.
The Blue Devils sprinted out to a commanding 10-3 lead after 4.5 innings of play before the Terrapins made a late rally that was halted due to the weather.
On a soggy Shipley Field playing surface, both teams combined for five runs on six hits with two errors in the first inning. In the Blue Devil half of the first, right fielder Brian Patrick led off the game when he reached on a throwing error by Maryland shortstop Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.). The next batter, shortstop Kevin Kelly, delivered a towering two-run home run to left field to give Duke a 2-0 lead. Second baseman Bryan Smith added a RBI-single later in the frame to make the score 3-0.
Maryland scored two runs of its own in the home half of the first on a two-run home run off the bat of freshman first baseman Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.). The home run was Maxey's 10th of the season and cut the Blue Devil lead to 3-2.
The Terrapins deadlocked the contest at three in the second on a RBI-groundout by senior right fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.).
After both teams failed to score in the third, Duke added one run in the fourth before scoring six runs in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. In the fifth, the Blue Devils totaled six hits and scored all six runs with two outs. The big blow in the inning was a three-run single by right fielder Brian Patrick. The Blue Devils also got RBI-base hits from Troy Caradonna and Kevin Kelly in the inning.
Maryland did not go down without a fight, as the Terps used the long ball to jump back into the game. In the fifth, freshman designated hitter Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) blasted a three-run home run to left field to cut the deficit 10-6.
In the sixth, Maxey drilled his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field, to make the score 10-8 Duke. It was Maxey's 11th homer of the season and his third multi-home run game of 2002.
Maxey finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs while Frazier was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Terrapins. Duke's Brian Patrick led the Blue Devils with four RBIs after finishing the contest 2-for-4.
Duke reliever Zach Schreiber (1-2) earned the victory after pitching one inning of relief and Ryan Sember came away with the save. Maryland starter Chris Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) was saddled with the loss and is 2-4 on the season.
