The Terrapin men's golf team is enjoying a 12-day break before its second District II tournament of the spring season at the two-day, 36-hole Liberty Classic at The Water's Edge Country Club in Smith Mountain Lake, Va.
Terps Claim Fourth At Colonial Intercollegiate
In their first District II tournament of the spring, the Terps recorded their best result with a fourth-place finish at the Colonial Intercollegiate at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. Maryland shot its best round of the spring, a three-over-par 291, in the second and final round to finish nine strokes behind team champion Elon.
Senior Corey Brigham nearly claimed his first victory of the year with a two-under-par score of 142. Brigham's second-round, three-under-par 69, his second spring round in the 60s, pulled him to within one shot of individual winner Adam Holman of host school William & Mary.
Freshman Bobby MacWhinnie's third-place tie at 143 was his best collegiate finish, besting an eighth-place result at the Temple Invitational in the fall. Rounds of 71 and 72 gave MacWhinnie a one-under-par total, marking the first sub-par tournament of his collegiate career.
Competing individually, senior Phillip Fenstermaker carded consecutive rounds of 74 to tie for 14th and finish with the best result of any individual-only competitor. Sophomore Tim Kane improved 13 places from the first day by shooting a second-round 73 that left him in a tie for 25th. Junior John Moheyer and senior Pete Toole finished in a 48th-place tie at 156.
Terps At A Glance
With his second-place showing at the Colonial, Brigham jumped into Golfstat's top 100 individuals at 96 overall. He stands as Golfstat's second-ranked golfer in District II, with his 72.503 adusted scoring average trailing only George Mason's Craig Mason by .519.
Brigham's second-place finish and MacWhinnie's tie for third at the Colonial gave the Terps their first pair of top-three individuals in a tournament for the first time since John Moheyer finished first and Keith Unikel tied for third at the Chattanooga Intercollegiate Oct. 4-5, 1999.
Despite finishing behind two regional opponents in their first District II tournament of the spring, the Terps continue to hold head-to-head winning records against every regional opponent except Penn State (0-2). The Nittany Lions hold a five-stroke advantage over Maryland after finishing ahead of the Terps at JMU and the Tillinghast Invitational. St. John's, William & Mary and James Madison are the only other District II teams to defeat the Terps, who are now 57-5 overall.
