COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland will open its 2002 football campaign in the Kickoff Classic vs. Notre Dame backed by 18,500 Terrapin fans who have purchased tickets for the event through the university's athletic ticket office.
The deadline for ticket purchases through the Terrapin Ticket Office was Tuesday. The game at 80,242-seat Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., is sold out, according to Kickoff Classic officials.
"This is a tremendous show of support and very much like our following for the Orange Bowl last January," said second-year Terp coach Ralph Friedgen, whose ACC championship team sparked on-campus ticket sales of more than 22,000 for last season's FedEx Orange Bowl. "We're excited about opening our season against one of college football's traditional powers, and it's particularly encouraging for the players and coaches to know we will have a significant fan presence at Giants Stadium in a nationally televised game. This is another positive step for our program, and I want our fans to know we appreciate their support."
This year's Kickoff Classic, slated for Saturday, Aug. 31, will mark the first-ever gridiron meeting between Maryland and Notre Dame.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET. The game will be televised nationally on ABC.
