COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
In the first of two preseason scrimmages at the Artificial Turf Facility in College Park, the Maryland Terrapins downed the Lafayette Leopards, 7-1, across 72 minutes of field hockey on Friday afternoon. The Terps, who welcome back four of their own when the U.S. National Team comes to Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m. as part of their Collegiate Challenge tour, continued its tradition as an offensive juggernaut with its new-look lineup.
Redshirt freshman Amber McQuillan (Coopersburg, Pa.) and sophomore Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) paced the Terps with two goals each on the day, while junior newcomer Katrin Rummer (Karlsruhe, Germany) handed out a pair of assists. Sophomore forward Courtney Thornton (Annapolis, Md.) and rookie attacker Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) combined with McQuillan and Silvetti to stake Maryland to a 4-0 lead after the first period.
McQuillan recorded the second of her two goals to mark the only score in the second period before sophomore back Kristin Harris (Litiz, Pa.) netted a third-period score. Silvetti's direct corner in the third period made it 7-0 in favor of the Terps before the Leopards' Meredith Hahn scored on a breakaway in the fourth period, which was played seven-a-side.
Sophomore Kerry Hearsey (Leicester, England) and redshirt freshman Tori Cano (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) split time in goal, with Hearsey recording a save and her counterpart Cano stopping two shots. Casey Devlin played the entire four periods for the Leopards between the pipes, recording 11 saves.
The Terrapins conclude their preseason scrimmage schedule with the game vs. the U.S. National team on Sunday. The Terrapins will welcome back alumnae Katie Kauffman-Beach (West Lawn, Pa./Maryland '97), Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y./Maryland '01), Keli Smith Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass./Maryland '02), who now play on the national squad.
