WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Off to its second-best start in Division I history, the Maryland volleyball team got 21 kills from Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) and 17 from Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) to hold off Georgetown on Tuesday evening at McDonough Gym. Maryland held off the Hoyas by final scores of 30-26, 27-30, 30-25, 30-28.
The unbeaten Terrapins (7-0) faced their stiffest challenge of the season against the Hoyas, but got career-highs in kills from both Jones and Treadwell, and 53 assists from senior setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.).
In seven matches this season, the Terps have won 21 of 24 games played, having been pushed to four games just three times including Tuesday night. Maryland's seven-match win streak is its longest to open a season since a perfect regular season (25-0) in 1997. It is the Terps' longest win streak overall since reeling off eight straight wins during the 2000 campaign.
Tuesday's match was still in doubt, however, all the way until the final point.
Leading 2-1 in the match, the Terps overcame a tense fourth game to put the Hoyas away. Once tied at 20, neither team led by more than a point until the end. Knotted at 28, however, Maryland senior Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) scored a kill to set up a serving ace by Davey to end the match.
"This was probably the best opponent we have played," said Jones after the match. "That was a tight fourth game. Either team could have won it. We made the right plays and had some players step up to help us win it."
One of those players was Treadwell, a sophomore who started the first match of her career and posted 14 digs to complement her career-high in kills. Treadwell earned her first starting assignment, as did freshman middle blocker Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.). Brennan, a second team All-ACC selection in 2001, was limited to mostly back row play while nursing a sore foot.
Maryland returns to Ritchie Coliseum on Friday to host the Terrapin Invitational, featuring Boston College, Indiana and Loyola Marymount. Admission is free to all matches.
Friday night matches feature Boston College and LMU at 5 p.m., followed by the Terps and Indiana at 7. Saturday's schedule has Maryland battling Boston College at 11 a.m., followed by IU and LMU at 1. The round-robin tournament concludes on Saturday with the Indiana and B.C. at 5, and Maryland against LMU at 7.
