No. 11 Irish Top Hartford 2-1 in First Game of Maryland/FILA Classic

The No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish captured the first match of the 2002 Maryland/FILA Classic Friday with a 2-1 victory over the Hartford Hawks.
Irish forward Amy Warner scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute when she connected on a breakaway off a thru-ball from midfielder Ashley Dryer.
After a lackluster first half that saw the teams combine for just four shots, the pace increased in the second half with pressure on both sides of the field.
Hartford struck first in the 48th minute on a goal by Tini Lyng who slid the ball past Notre Dame keeper Erika Bohn. Hartford's leading scorer Jenette Akerlund was credited with the assist, giving her 15 points on the young season.
Notre Dame quickly responded by tying the score at one in the 51st minute on a free kick by Randi Scheller that trickled past Hartford keeper Heather Hinton.
With the win, the Irish move to 3-2, ending a two game losing streak in which they were held scoreless at home for the first time in ten years. Hartford falls to 2-2 overall.
On the second day of Maryland/FILA Classic, Hartford takes on Loyola to kick off Sunday's action at 11:30 a.m. The No. 11 Fighting Irish square off with No. 25 Maryland at 2 p.m. That game will be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmucsports.com.
