COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland's volleyball team remained unbeaten on Friday night by powering past Indiana on the strength of outside hitters Lynssy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) and Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.). Jones blasted 18 kills in a 3-0 shutout of the Hoosiers, and Brennan added 15 kills as the Terrapins matched their longest win streak in three seasons.
Maryland (8-0) is off to its best start since a 25-0 regular season in 1997, and turnabout was fair play at Ritchie Coliseum on Friday as the Terps swept Indiana (5-2), 30-28, 30-27, 30-26, in the first round of the Terrapin Invitational. It was last season that IU put a 3-0 shackle on Maryland, in Bloomington.
Jones was equaled in the scoring column by IU's Christina Archibald who also posted 18 kills, but it was the Terrapins who consistently delivered the knockout blows. All three games went to the wire in what was otherwise a statistical draw.
After Maryland won the opening game 30-28, the Terps broke a 25-25 tie to slip past the Hoosiers and win game two, 30-27, and race to an 8-1 lead in game three. Indiana, however, played catch-up to lead 10-8, and after trailing again 26-20, drew within 26-25 before Maryland pulled away for good.
Brennan led all players with 15 digs in the match, and Rachel Wagener led the Terrapins with four blocks. It was Jones, however, and Archibald, whose power took control. While Brennan was virtually errorless on the attack with just two errors and a .351 hitting percentage, Jones added a pair of aces, eight digs and three blocks to her performance. The Hoosiers' Archibald led all players with a match-high .400 hitting percentage while adding three aces, 12 digs and three blocks.
Maryland will seek a ninth straight victory while hosting Boston College at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning when the Terrapin Invitational resumes. Admission is free to all matches, with Saturday's opener followed by Indiana against Loyola Marymount, a three-game winner over Boston College in Friday's tournament opener.
The round-robin tournament concludes on Saturday with Indiana and Boston College at 5, and Maryland against LMU at 7.
