Postgame Quotes: Maryland vs. Florida State

Sept. 14, 2002

Recap| Final Stats| Notes| Photo Gallery

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Head Coach Ralph Friedgen:

On Maryland's six turnovers:
"I think the turnovers said about everything. When you turn the ball over like we did, you can't beat the Sisters of the Poor and we weren't playing the Sisters of the Poor tonight."

On playing tough in the second half:
"I was proud of our kids in the way they came back in the second half. We'll take some positive things from that. However, we did turn the ball over and we've got to get that corrected. I thought we executed the running game the way we were supposed to on that one drive."

On getting within 20 points in the fourth quarter:
"When we got that score to make it 30-10, I talked to Gary [Blackney]... to see if we could make something happen. He was all for it but we missed so many tackles on that drive. I thought we could have gotten the ball back and got another one on the board. Now it's 30-17 and we might have a shot with seven minutes left to go in the game ... but, it didn't work out that way."

On the positives from tonight's game:
"What I'm really looking forward to seeing is who played hard in the second half and try to find what guys are competitors. I also wanted to gain some experience with some of our young kids, work on the two-minute [drill]. I'm just looking to improve any way I can."

On Chris Downs and the offense:
"I thought Chris [Downs] played pretty good. I think he played hard the whole game. I didn't think our offense was very good. At times, it was, but we've got to get a lot better."

PLAYER QUOTES

Chris Downs
On losing to Florida State
"This game was supposed to be a real huge tone-setter for this season and to come out and turn over the ball and miss assignments, that just wasn't very fundamentally sound on our part."

"1-2 is not a nice sounding record, but we are going to keep our heads up, bounce back, and next week play Maryland football."

Scooter Monroe

On the first half vs. the second
"In the second half, everybody calmed down, we ran our bread-and-butter and we ran it right. That is how it has to be. I don't know what happened [in the first half]. I guess people were just trying to make plays that were too big. Everybody just needs to calm down, do their jobs and everything will work out."

On the touchdown that was called back
"I didn't see the penalty; I just saw the flag afterwards. That's just one of those things where you are so hyped, then you look back and see the flag on the ground and it just kills you."

On Maryland's record
"I wanted Maryland to go undefeated. We lost to Florida State last year so we really wanted this one. We have to look forward now and try to win the rest of the games."

Madieu Williams

On Maryland's defense)
"We knew how [Florida State] was going to attack us and we were in position, but we just didn't make the plays. You have to give them credit--they finished their plays."

"On both touchdown passes, both guys were in position to make the play and it was a question of who wanted the ball most. [Florida State] made the plays and we didn't."
