DENVER, Colo. -
Cassie Perret tallied 15 kills on Friday night to lead West Coast power and No. 19-ranked Santa Clara past Maryland in women's volleyball, 3-0. Santa Clara ended the Terrapins' 11-match win streak during the opening round of the Denver Invitational, played at Hamilton Gymnasium. Denver and No. 8 Minnesota played the nightcap.
Maryland (11-1) saw the second-longest win streak to open a season draw to a close on Friday despite 10 kills by junior outside hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.). In what was a homecoming for Maryland setter and Denver native Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.), the Terps' senior registered 27 assists out of the Terps' 33 kills on the night.
Maryland's win streak was its longest since a 26-game streak and a perfect regular season in 1997. It was the third-longest streak in school history.
Santa Clara (9-1) beat the Terrapins 30-19, 30-24, 30-19 in what was the third consecutive win for the Broncos. It was the 10th straight road match for SCU. Joining Perret as hitting stars for SCU were Alyssa Lantz and Becky Potter, both with 13 kills.
Maryland battles host Denver on Saturday afternoon, and ends play in the tournament on Saturday night while battling eighth-ranked Minnesota.
