DENVER, Colo. -
A Denver homecoming turned sour on Friday afternoon for Maryland setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.), who suffered a fractured finger before the Terps' match with 19th-ranked Santa Clara.
Davey struggled during a three-game loss to the Broncos on Friday evening, and Saturday afternoon was forced to watch from the sideline as the Terrapins suffered their second loss of the season, 3-2 against previously winless Denver.
DU dumped the Terps 31-29, 26-30, 30-27, 23-30, 15-10 in a two-and-a-half-hour match which saw Maryland fall to 11-2 after beginning the year with 11 consecutive wins and the third-longest win streak in school history.
In place of Davey against the Pioneers was sophomore Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) who handled 65 assists in the marathon match, setting up senior Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) whose 27 kills were one shy of her career-high.
Denver (1-8) outlasted Maryland in the decisive fifth game, 15-10, after the Terps tied the match with a 30-23 win in game four. Huddleston's presence helped key a stronger block for the Terrapins who notched a season-high 13 blocks, led by six from freshman Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.) and five from Huddleston. Other Maryland contributors were Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) who recorded 16 kills, and Jennifer Dewalt (Bethlehem, Pa.) who had 13 kills.
Maryland ends the three-match Denver Invitational on Saturday evening when the Terrapins battle No. 8-ranked Minnesota. Davey was questionable for the match with the Golden Gophers, and will be re-evaluated prior to next week's matches with George Mason (Sept. 24) and Georgia Tech (Sept. 27).
