COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Welcome to "Inside the Circle," a weekly inside look at Maryland field hockey. Each Tuesday throughout the 2002 season, senior Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) and sophomore Kristin Harris (Lititz, Pa.) will combine to bring you the latest Terp happenings from the student-athlete's point-of-view.
Use Kateri and Kristin's journal to follow the Terps' 2002 campaign all season long. If you would like to submit question to our authors about field hockey, the Terps or anything (within reason!), send us an e-mail.
This week, Kristin steps in for her first entry. She tells the story of the Terps' first big road trip, noting that it was a great learning and bonding experience despite the Terps' first loss.
Hello to all of you Maryland field hockey fans or just hockey fans in general. Welcome to a new and exciting season of Inside the Circle with senior Kateri Simon and me, new writer to the scene Kristin Harris. We will try to keep you up to date on the latest news, scores and fun stories regarding UMD field hockey -- so stay tuned. With this 2002 Terp team, the next exciting story is waiting just around the corner.
This past Friday, we made the long haul down to Deamon Deacon territory where we played a talented bunch of athletes that unfortunately won the game in overtime, 2-1. Both teams worked hard but we agreed that we did not work as smartly as our potential allows. In that aspect, it was a disappointing loss, but on the positive side, we learned a tremendous amount about ourselves and about the journey we are willing to create and embark on together this season. It is only a matter of time before we will meet this Wake Forest team again. Next time, I guarantee Wake a greater challenge with a stronger Terrapin team.
On Sunday, we found ourselves in yet a different situation playing the Virginia Commonwealth Rams. We certainly grew in this game as we began to fulfill some of our previously set goals. We controlled the play, but had difficulty finishing prime opportunities in the offensive circle. In the end, we came away from VCU with a well-deserved 1-0 victory and a new understanding of the "way" we want to play Maryland field hockey.
We left on Friday morning knowing we were in for a weekend of long bus trips and two hard fought games, but to our suprise, the weekend held more learning and laughter than any of us could have expected. As for now, we will prepare for next weekend's matches against Princeton and California with a combination of rest, intense practice, and a rejuvinated mindset. Check in with Kateri next week to read about the upcoming weekend of Terrapin field hockey.
