Lynnette Moster blasted 29 kills and added 13 digs on Friday night to lead No. 25 Georgia Tech to a 3-1 college volleyball victory over Maryland, in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools. Georgia Tech won the match 30-20, 29-31, 30-24, 20-24.
The Yellow Jackets (15-2, 1-0 ACC) also got 17 kills from Lauren Sauer and a career-high 15 from Jayme Gergen as Georgia Tech sent Maryland to its fifth consecutive loss, after beginning the season with 11 straight victories.
Junior outside hitter Lynnsy Jones led Maryland (11-5, 0-1 ACC) with 16 kills and a pair of serving aces. It was a Jones kill and ace on back-to-back plays that gave the Terrapins the win in game two. After falling behind in the match after game one, the Terps broke open a 21-21 tie and put Maryland in control. It was another Jones kill that gave Maryland a 22-21 lead, and after holding a 27-24 advantage, Maryland withstood a Yellow Jacket charge to score the final two points of the game after a tie at 29.
Seven ties during the opening serves of game three were enough to keep the Terps close, but Tech opened a 16-12 lead to assert control. Maryland closed within a point at 22-21, but the Jackets opened a 25-22 lead and won the game 30-24.
The Jackets continued their momentum in game four, opening a 10-4 lead and coasting to another 30-24 win.
Other leaders for the Terrapins included Jennifer Dewalt with 12 kills and Carey Brennan with 10. Brennan led Maryland with 15 digs. Jones had a part of four blocks.
Maryland continues its ACC schedule on Saturday evening while hosting Clemson at Ritchie Coliseum. Match time is 5 p.m.
