COLLEGE PARK, Md. - For the second year in a row, Maryland field hockey forward Colleen Barbieri (Centereach, N.Y.) was named ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week in the opening week of the season. Barbieri, who claimed weekly conference honors twice as a freshman in addition to the conference's Rookie of the Year award, scored four goals and tallied one assist in Terp victories over Northwestern and New Hampshire as the Terps began the 2002 season in Chicago.
The sophomore was credited with the game-winning goals in both the Terps' 3-1 season-opening win at Northwestern and also in Maryland's 4-1 defeat of UNH. Barbieri, who tied for sixth in the nation in points (40) and goals (17) after a sensational rookie campaign, paces the ACC after one week of play with nine points.
The Terrapins led the all ACC schools with five player of the week honors a season ago while claiming Maryland's fourth straight conference title and marching all the way to the NCAA championship game. Barbieri and then-senior Autumn Welsh each earned weekly conference honors twice, in addition to a one-time selection for then-senior Dina Rizzo.
Barbieri and the Terps open their home schedule this Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. when the Drexel Dragons come to town at the start of a big weekend of field hockey in College Park. The Terps' non-conference nemesis, perennial-power Old Dominion, visits the Artificial Turf Facility on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. as part of its annual home-and-away series with the Terps. Admission to all the Terps' home games is free.
