Volleyball Team Defeats Syracuse To Open Season With 4-0 Mark

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Maryland volleyball team continued its unbeaten streak to begin the 2002 season on Friday afternoon by defeating Syracuse in three straight games to run its record to 4-0. Senior Carey Brennan blasted 16 kills and junior Lynnsy Jones added 14 as the Terps dispatched the Orangewomen 30-25, 30-26, 30-20, in the first match of the Days Inn/JMU Invitational at Harrisonburg, Va.

Syracuse (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season as the Terrapins hit .345 as a team, posted six serving aces and recorded eight blocks. Syracuse had as many kills as it had errors.

Senior setter Lindsay Davey managed 41 of the Terps' 47 assists in the match. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Smith led the Terrapins with six block assists, and Jones had five.

Maryland continues play at the Days Inn/JMU Invitational at 5 p.m. on Friday against Campbell University. The tournament concludes with Maryland battling James Madison on Saturday afternoon at 2. The Terps jumped to a 3-0 record last weekend by winning all three matches of the Maryland Invitational.
