The Maryland volleyball team continued its unbeaten streak on Friday afternoon, opening the year with a 5-0 record for the first time since posting a 25-0 regular season in 1997. After winning the Maryland Invitational last weekend, the Terps opened play at the Days Inn/JMU Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va., by dispatching Syracuse and Campbell in three games apiece on Friday.
In five matches this season, the Terps have won 15 of 16 games played.
Maryland made quick work of Campbell (0-2), routing the Camels by scores of 30-21, 30-16, 30-25. Junior outside hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) led the Terrapins with 17 kills. Sophomore setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) enjoyed her second start of the season by assisting on 32 of the Terps' 49 kills. Huddleston also led the Terrapins with nine digs, and senior Amanda Ayres (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) had a career-high nine aces, just one shy of the Maryland single-match record.
The Terrapins opened the tournament earlier in the day with a three-game win over previously unbeaten Syracuse. Brennan blasted 16 kills and Jones added 14 as the Terps dispatched the Orangewomen 30-25, 30-26, 30-20. Davey managed 41 of the Terps' 47 assists in the match. Redshirt freshman Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) led the Terrapins with six block assists, and Jones had five. Syracuse (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season as the Terrapins hit .345 as a team, posted six serving aces and recorded eight blocks. Syracuse had as many kills as it had errors.
Maryland continues play at the Days Inn/JMU Invitational at 2 p.m. on Saturday against tournament host James Madison. The Terps travel to Georgetown next Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m., before hosting the Terrapin Invitational on Sept. 13-14 with visiting Boston College, Indiana and Loyola Marymount.
