HARRISONBURG, Va. -
Jennifer Dewalt (Bethlehem, Pa.) had 18 kills and Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) added 17 on Saturday afternoon as the Maryland women's volleyball team defeated James Madison 30-27, 29-31, 30-25, 30-14 to remain undefeated and win the Days Inn/JMU Invitational in Harrisonburg. The Terrapins (6-0) won a tournament for the second consecutive week after winning their own Maryland Invitational in College Park last weekend.
In six matches this season, the Terps have won 18 of 20 games played, having been pushed to four games just twice including Saturday. Maryland's six-match win streak is its longest to open a season since a perfect regular season (25-0) in 1997. It is the Terps' longest win streak overall since reeling off eight straight wins during the 2000 campaign.
Just as the Terps won back-to-back tournament titles, it was Jones who earned MVP honors on Saturday for the second consecutive week. After boasting 14 kills in the tournament opener vs. Syracuse, the junior outside hitter blasted 17 kills in each of the last two matches of the tournament. She also had six serving aces during the three-match weekend, including five on Saturday against JMU.
Jones was joined on the all-tournament team by Maryland teammates Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) and Amanda Ayres (Chesapeake Beach, Md.), both seniors.
Dewalt, a sophomore, registered a career high in kills while leading Maryland past the Dukes. Ayres led the Terps with four blocks on Saturday, and posted two more aces to run her tournament total to 10. She was one shy of a Maryland single-match record with eight aces against Campbell on Friday.
The unbeaten Terrapins travel to Georgetown on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Maryland hosts the Terrapin Invitational at Ritchie Coliseum next weekend, Sept. 13-14, by hosting Boston College, Indiana and Loyola Marymount.
