Terps Host Final Two Games of Nine-Game Homestand
* The Terps look back to get back to their winning ways and even out their ACC record after suffering their first loss of the season on Sunday against #1 Wake Forest. The Cavaliers visit College Park on Saturday to open Maryland's busy weekend. A reunion of sorts will take place at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Sunday. Ohio State makes its first visit to College Park since 1979 for the Aeropostale ACC/Big Ten Challenge and has not played the Terps since 1984. The game also pits to former teammates against each other. Head coaches Missy Meharg and Anne Wilkinson played along side each other for three seasons at the University of Delaware.
* Virginia has not defeated a ranked opponent this year and is riding a four-game losing skid. UVA is also 0-1 in conference play and will look to mend their record this weekend. The Buckeyes will look to carry its momentum from its 1-0 overtime upset win over No. 20 Northwestern into this weekend. Before taking on the Terps, OSU will face Maine at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
* Maryland has been in the friendly confines of the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex since Sept. 12, posting a 6-1 record. The Terps close out their nine-game homestand this weekend.
Terps on TV
* Sunday's ACC/Big Ten Challenge game versus Ohio State air on television on CSTV on Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. Check Direct TV listings for more information.
A Look At The Terps
* With Maryland's back-to-back 7-0 victories against Rutgers and Pacific in the Terrapin Invitational, 16th-year head coach Missy Meharg recorded her 250th-career victory and boasts a 254-82-9 (.749). A 1985 graduate of Delaware, Meharg was named Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2002. During her tenure, she has led the Terps to two national championship titles (1993 and 1999) and five Atlantic Coast Championship crowns. Maryland's all-time winningest coach, she has been named National Coach of the Year four times.
* Continuing to lead the team in goals and scoring, freshman Paula Infante has 12 goals and 29 points. Infante went on a tear to open the season, scoring at least a goal in the Terps' first six goals of the season. Sophomore Jackie Ciconte has also posted double-digit goals at 11, with three others scoring at least six. The team's assist leader with 13, sophomore All-American Lauren Powley did not record an assist all of last season and now leads the country in assists for the second-straight week.
* Sixth in the nation in goals against average, sophomore Tori Cano boasts an 0.95 average and team-leading 23 saves in just under 662 minutes played. Redshirt freshman Christina Restivo has not allowed a goal in 115:44 minutes. The Terps goalkeepers have recorded six shutouts this season.
* Maryland has been peppering its opposing goalies, outscoring its opponents 56-9 and outshooting them 255-52. The top-ranked offense in the nation, the Terps are scoring 5.05 goals per game.
* The Terps return 11 letterwinners from last year's 17-5 team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and reached the ACC Tournament finals. Seven starters return, including 2002 NFHCA second team All-American and 2001 ACC Rookie of the Year Colleen Barbieri. Barbieri is the team's top-returning scorer. Maryland also welcomes 10 newcomers to the squad who have made an immediate impact.
Terps' Last Time Out
* A penalty shot in overtime gave the Terps a 3-2 win over No. 10 Princeton. A well-fought first half, junior Anja Boettcher gave Maryland a 1-0 lead just over 20 minutes into the game. After the break, the Terps wasted no time adding to their lead as sophomore Jackie Ciconte dove to deflect a pass into the net, putting UM ahead, 2-0. The Tigers, however, battled back to tie the score, tallying goals just 18 seconds apart in the 67th minute to send the game into overtime. Maryland dominated in the overtime, outshooting the Tigers 8-1 and drawing two penalty corners. After a missed penalty shot, the Terps capitalized the second time around, as Paula Infante banged in the score to grab the win.
* In a battle of the undefeateds, Maryland fell short against the top-ranked team in the nation and defending national champion Wake Forest. The Terps lost 3-1 dropping their first game of the season and snapping a 10-game win streak. The Deacons went up 3-0 before sophomore Amber McQuillan scored on a rebounded shot to avoid the shutout. It was the first-ever win in College Park for the Deacons.
A Look at the Cavaliers
* In her fifth season as mentor of the Cavaliers, Jessica Wilk is the only head coach in school history to guide the team to the NCAA Tournament in three of their first four seasons. A four-year letterwinner at Maryland from 1986-88, she was a three time All-American for the Terps. Before joining the UVA staff, she spent one season as assistant coach of the Terrapin field hockey and lacrosse teams.
* Ranked 15th in the nation, Virginia is 5-4 on the season. All four of its losses have come against teams ranked in this week's NFHCA Top 20, including No. 2 North Carolina, 5-1, although the loss does not count towards the team's conference record and the two will meet again on Oct. 10. The Cavaliers have scored the same number of goals they have allowed, 19. Allison Flynn leads the team with four goals and nine points. Katie Nicholson and Katie Phillips also have a team best nine points on three goals and three assists.
* Defensively, the Cavaliers have an amazing five team defensive saves with Katie Jo Gerfen and Erin Hayes lead the squad with two each which ranks seventh in the nation. Goalkeeper Lori Carr has played every minute in goal and leads the ACC with 46 saves.
* UVA returns 11 letterwinners and seven starters from last season's 9-1 squad. Last year, Virginia went winless in conference play and finished last in the league. The 2003 Cavaliers are a fairly young squad with just three seniors and three juniors.
* LAST MEETING: The Terps scored a goal in each of the first, second and overtime periods to come away with a 3-2 win over the Cavaliers. Colleen Barbieri scored a goal just under seven minutes into the overtime to lift Maryland to the victory. Carissa Messimer gave the Terps the early 1-0 lead in the first period. But the Cavaliers responded in the second half. Izzy Palmer gave the Terps their second lead, but UVA scored with less than 10 minutes to play to send the game into overtime.
A Look at the Buckeyes
* In her eight season, Anne Wilkinson has compiled an 89-57 record at Ohio State and an 168-140-8 mark in 17 years as head coach. A 1987 graduate of Delaware, she has guided the Buckeyes to six-consecutive winning seasons, a Big Ten regular season title and a conference tournament crown. Wilkinson spent nine seasons at American where she was named conference coach of the year twice and regional coach of the year honors once.
* The Buckeyes have a couple of standout forwards in Vanessa Immordino and Lucy Clayton. Both are tied for third in the nation with 2.98 points per game with each scoring 11 goals which is tied for fifth. The Buckeyes are coming off of a 1-0 overtime upset win over then-No. 20 Northwestern.
* Goalkeepers Tory Krauss and Lindsay Williams have split time in the cage. Williams has started six games and played over 436 minutes and has 23 saves and a 2.07 goals against average. A starter in three matches, Krauss carries a team-best 1.67 GAA.
* The Buckeyes went 8-10 last season and tied for fourth in the Big Ten with a 2-4 mark. Fourteen letterwinners return, including the team's leading scorer Vanessa Immordino. * LAST MEETING: The last time the two teams faces each other was almost 20 years ago in 1984. The Terps cruised to a 4-0 victory in New Brunswick, N.J.
Series versus...
* VIRGINIA: Maryland leads the all-time series, 24-19-2. Since the series began in 1977, the series has been close with neither team stringing together more than four-consecutive wins against the other team. The Terps accomplished that feat twice and the Cavaliers once. The Terps have won seven of the last nine meetings, with the 1999 matchup and both meetings in 2000 coming by a shut out. In those last nine games, three have gone to overtime, with the 2001 meeting in College Park being decided by penalty strokes.
* OHIO STATE: The have played each other just two times in the history of the season and the last meeting was almost 20 years ago in 1984. Both games were shutout victories in favor of the Terps, 1-0 (1979) and 4-0 (1984).
Terps Lead the Nation
* Maryland edges ACC foe North Carolina for the top offense in the nation, scoring 5.04 goals per game. The Terps are ranked in the top five in scoring defense, margin of victory and winning percentage.
* The nation's assist leader is a Terp. After not recording an assist all of last season, sophomore All-American Lauren Powley has a nation-leading 13 helpers this season. Freshman Paula Infante has the second-most points (29) and points per game (2.9) in the nation. Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Cano is just out of the top five in goals against average and ranks sixth with an 0.952 GAA. In all, seven different Terps are among the nation's top 20 in several different categories. For a full list, check out the right margin of page three.
In the ACC Stats
* In the ACC statistical categories, freshman Paula Infante has led the league all season in points. This week, she is two points ahead of North Carolina's Rachel Dawson with 29. Sophomore All-American Lauren Powley is second in the ACC with 1.44 assists per game, followed by junior Emily Boyer, averaging 1.22 apg.
* Sophomore Tori Cano is third in the conference with an 0.95 goals against average and her 23 saves is fifth. Sophomore Jackie Ciconte (22 pts, 5th; 1.00 gpg 3rd), junior Colleen Barbieri (21 pts, T6th; 0.90 gpg, 6th) and junior Anja Boettcher (19 pts, T10th; 0.82 gpg, 9th) are also among the top 10 in the league in points and goals per game.
* Maryland leads the ACC in two offensive categories. The Terps average a league-leading 14.09 points per game and 23.18 shots per game. The team's six shutouts are also a league-best. Maryland is edged by North Carolina (5.10) for the most goals per game, averaging 5.09 per game. The Terps' team goals against average of 0.81 is third and 2.36 save per game is fourth.
I Know You
* Squaring off on Sunday are a couple of old teammates. Maryland head coach Missy Meharg and Ohio State head coach Anne Wilkinson were once field hockey and lacrosse teammates at the University of Delaware in the early 1980's. In 1982, the Blue Hens advanced to the national semifinal games in field hockey then won a national championship in lacrosse that spring of 1983.
Terp Attack
* The formidable attack from two years ago seems to be back. Maryland has outscored its opponents 56-9 through 11 games. Last year, the Terps scored their 56th goal in the first round ACC Tournament game against North Carolina, 19 games into the season.
* Two years ago, the Terps were the top-ranked offense in the nation. Maryland ranked 14th at the end of last season.
Terps "D" Up
* Six of Maryland's 10 wins have come by virtue of shutout. The Terps have allowed just nine goals this season, allowing more than one goal to opponents just three times. The shots and penalty corners have been hard to come by for opponents as well. Maryland opponents average 4.72 shots per game and 2.55 penalty corners per game. It's no wonder the Terrapin defense has been so hard to penetrate. The backfield ranks fourth in the nation in scoring defense at 0.81.
Seeing Double
* Six different Terps have scored at least two goals in a game. Team scoring leader freshman Paula Infante has had the most two-goal performances, scoring a pair in four games. Sophomore Jackie Ciconte has accomplished that feat three times. Junior All-American Colleen Barbieri, junior Anja Boettcher and junior co-captain Sara Silvetti have recorded two two-goal games. Sophomore Amber McQuillan rounds out the list, tallying two goals in the win over Rutgers. Boettcher is the only Terp this season to record a hat trick.
* The Terps own the nation's leading offense, scoring 5.04 goals per game.
Meharg reaches 250
* Maryland's 7-0 win over Pacific on the final day of the Terrapin Invitational gave head coach Missy Meharg her 250th-career victory. Already the program's all-time winningest coach, she boasts a record of 254-82-9 in 16 years. On Sept. 20, 1998, Meharg became Maryland's winningest coach with a 3-0 win vs. UMass, chalking up her 153rd career triumph.
Terps to Named to U.S. Team
* Four former Terps were selected for the U.S. National Team's residency program. Katie Kauffman-Beach ('97), Carissa Messimer ('03) Dina Rizzo ('02) and Keli Smith ('01) were named to the 19-player roster which was selected after open tryouts held at the team's training site in Virginia Beach, Va. The U.S. will begin preparations for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, March 19-28, 2004, in Auckland, New Zealand, including hosting the International Atlantic Cup which features four of the top 10 ranked teams in the world.
* Kauffman-Beach, Rizzo and Smith each played for the U.S. team this summer, helping the Stars & Stripes capture a silver medal at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Kauffman-Beach was named team captain of that squad. Messimer is making her debut on the senior squad, having been a member of the 2001 Junior World Cup Team and 1999 Under-20 squad.
Tough Schedule
* The Terps continually play one of the toughest schedules in the nation. This year's slate is no different as Maryland is scheduled or has faced nine teams ranked in this week's NFHCA Coaches Poll. The top four spots in the poll are occupied by ACC teams, including Maryland. All five ACC teams are among the top 15. Wake Forest is the top team in the country for the third week in a row, followed by North Carolina, the Terps and Duke. Virginia is 15th in the country.
* The top four teams in the nation, besides Maryland, are featured on the Terps' schedule. After the top four spots which are occupied by ACC teams, Michigan, which the Terps defeated 4-2, is fifth. Seventh in the poll is Old Dominion, a team which UM has also already defeated. The Terps defeated No. 10 Princeton in an edge-of-your seat matchup last weekend, but fell to No. 1 Wake Forest. No. 12 Delaware visits the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Oct. 18 and the Terps have already beaten No. 19 Harvard who enters the poll for the first time this season. This weekend's opponent, Ohio State, and American are receiving votes.
Terps in Openers
* The Terrapins are 25-3-2 in season openers since program's first year in 1974. Maryland went unbeaten the first 15 years, going 13-0-2 before losing back-to-back openers in 1989 (at Virginia) and 1990 (at Old Dominion). UM has won the last seven opening games of the season.
* When opening the home slate, the Terps are 24-4-2 all-time, having won the last five home openers in a row.
Infante Earns Conference Honor
* Freshman defender Paula Infante was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for the opening week of the season on Sept. 1. The Santiago, Chile, native tallied three goals and two assists in the Terps' first two wins of the season. She also contributed to Maryland's defensive effort which allowed just three shots and one penalty corner combined over both games.
Maryland No. 3 in First Poll of the Year
* The Maryland Terrapins were ranked third in the initial National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 20 poll of the year which was released on Sept. 9. Prior to that announcement, the Terps were 4-0, including posting a 2-1 victory over arch-rival Old Dominion.
Terps Name Captains
* Juniors Sara Silvetti and Kristin Harris have been named captains for the 2003 season. Silvetti, a redshirt junior, is a back and has started every game for the Terps the last two seasons. Harris is a midfielder who has started all but one game the last two seasons and was named second team NFHCA Mid-Atlantic Region.
Up Next
* The Terps hit the road for the first time since Sept. 6 to battle No. 4 Duke for another conference tilt on Oct. 11.
