Postgame Notes: Maryland 27, Virginia 17

The University of Maryland football team moved to 7-3 (4-2 ACC) on the season with its 27-17 victory over Virginia, its seventh win in eight games. The Cavaliers now stand at 5-5 (3-4 ACC).

Maryland now leads the all-time series, 39-27-2. The Terrapins have won two of three against the 'Hoos under Ralph Friedgen.

With the victory, Maryland finishes the season a perfect 6-0 at home. The Terps posted their 19th-ever perfect home slate and third undefeated home schedule since 1975.

In three years as the head coach at his alma mater, Ralph Friedgen owns a 19-1 record in the friendly confines of Byrd Stadium.

By scoring on its opening possession tonight, the Terrapins kept alive their streak of having scored first in each of their 10 games this season (and in 14 consecutive games dating to the 2002 season). In each game except the North Carolina contest, Maryland has taken a lead into the second quarter.

With one touchdown pass tonight, senior Scott McBrien moved into a tie for third on the Terrapin all-time list - a spot he will finish his career in - for touchdown passes. McBrien now has 26, equalling the mark of Neil O'Donnell, who also posted 26 from 1987-89.

Josh Allen finished the night with a career-high 257 yards on 38 carries with two touchdowns. Now with 16 rushing touchdowns in just two years as a Terp, Allen ranks 11th on the Maryland career chart in that category.

Allen's previous career-high mark of 136 yards was shattered by halftime, and his total of 257 yards ranks as the third-best rushing day in Terrapin history. Only LaMont Jordan's 306 yards (11-20-99 vs. Virginia) and Bruce Perry's 276 yards (9-22-01 vs. Wake Forest) top Allen's performance. Also, Allen's 38 rushing attempts stands as the fifth-most carries in a single game in Terp history.

Allen's 257-yard game stands as the 11th-best single-game performance in ACC history.

Thursday marked Allen's second 100-yard game of the season, and his first 200-yard game. Allen's record night marked the 14th 200-yard rushing performance in Maryland history.

Allen's 80-yard romp in the second quarter was the longest of his career and the longest by a Terp since Bruce Perry's 80-yard run against Wake Forest on Sept. 22, 2001.

With his 41-yard reception in the second quarter (which led to the Terps' second TD), senior WR Jafar Williams came up with his longest reception of the season and moved up on the Maryland career charts. Williams now has 83 receptions - tying him for 14th with Vernon Joines (1985-88) and John Tice (1979-82) - for 1,189 yards, moving him into 14th on the career yardage list, ahead of standout Frank Wycheck (1990-92).

Nick Novak's 45-yard field goal in the fourth quarter marked the 302nd point of his career to put him six points behind all-time points leader Jess Atkinson (308).

Randy Starks' fourth-quarter sack moved him into Maryland's top-10 career sacks list with 15.5. Starks has 5.5 sacks on the season.

In last five meetings, Maryland has held Virginia to just two sacks. The Terps held UVa to zero sacks tonight.

Today's attendance was 51,027, the sixth time in as many home games this season that Maryland has hit the 50,000+ mark. Prior to this year, the Terrapins never had a season with more than three games that had an attendance of 50,000 or more. This season, Maryland's home attendance average is 51,236.

Maryland's next opponent, NC State (7-3, 4-2 ACC), takes on Florida State this Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.
