The University of Maryland volleyball team (23-7, 12-4 ACC) heads to the ACC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face the seventh-seeded Duke Blue Devils at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., today at 5:00 p.m. Maryland wrapped up its regular season last Friday night in Tallahassee, beating Florida State in five games.
The winner of Friday night's match will advance to face the winner of the No. 3 Wake Forest/No. 6 Clemson match in the ACC Tournament semifinal, played at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The title match will take place on Sunday, Nov. 23, and will be televised on Fox Sports Net South, the Sunshine Network and Comcast SportsNet.
Earlier this season, the Terrapins defeated the Blue Devils in three games in College Park and in four games in Durham. The ACC Tournament showdown between the two teams is a rematch from last year's first round, when the Blue Devils ousted the Terps, 3-0, in Atlanta, Ga.
About Duke
The Blue Devils enter the ACC Tournament with a 10-18 overall record, 6-10 in the conference. Leading Duke is Tassy Rufai and Krista Dill, as Rufai averages a team-high 3.28 kills per game and Dill leads the team in blocks (1.5 per game). Defensively, Stephanie Istvan anchors the Blue Devils (3.28 digs her game).
In the all-time series, Duke leads Maryland, 27-20, but the Terps captured victories in both matches this season. The last time the two teams met was on Oct. 26 in Durham, when Maryland bested the Devils, 3-1. In that match, Sarah Treadwell drilled a career-high 18 kills and Fiona DeFreitas had 25 digs to lead the Terps.
The last time the two teams met at the conference tournament was on Nov. 22, 2002, in a match that Duke won, 3-0.
Terps at the ACC Tournament
Maryland's all-time record at the conference championships is 23-24 since 1980, with titles in 1990 and 1996. The Terps have made it to the final match three times, beating North Carolina for the crown in 1990 (3-1) and Georgia Tech in 1996 (3-0), and losing to the Yellow Jackets in 1995 (0-3).
The Terps have been in the semifinals at the ACC Championships 13 times in its history, compiling a 3-10 record.
Against conference schools, Maryland has the best all-time tournament record against Wake Forest, having never lost to the Demon Deacons. North Carolina has the top record against the Terps, as the Tar Heels have bested the Terps seven times in the tournament.
In ACC Tournament matches in Orlando, the Terrapins are 0-1, with a loss to NC State in 1999.
