CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Three field hockey players were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team, which was announced on Thursday night at the annual championship banquet. Sophomores Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) and Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.), and freshman Paula Infante (Santiago, Chile) were selected to the 11-member team, each earning the honor for the first time.
A third team All-American a year ago, Powley is a midfielder who ranks eighth in the nation with 14 assists. A starter in every game this season, she scored her second goal of the season in the ACC Tournament win against Virginia on Thursday afternoon.
Ciconte is having a breakout season. She is second on the team with 16 goals and is tied for a team-high four game-winning goals, both of which are career bests. The most efficient scorer on the team, she has converted on 39 percent of her shots. Ciconte was recently named ACC Player of the Week after leading the team to a thrilling, 3-2 overtime victory at No. 4 North Carolina after scoring a goal and an assist in the match.
In her first season in a Maryland uniform, Infante has made an immediate impact to the team's success. She has led the team in scoring for most of the season and now leads the Terps with 39 points. She is also the team's goal leader with 16 and four game-winning goals. Infante was named ACC Player of the Week in the opening week of the season.
Since 1993, at least three Terrapins have earned all-conference honors.
Maryland defeated Virginia in the first round of the ACC Tournament, 5-1. The Terps move onto the semifinals to face top-seeded and top-ranked Wake Forest on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
