COLLEGE PARK, Md - The University of Maryland women's gymnastics team dominated West Virginia, 193.775-192-975 to win its second straight at home, in the new Comcast Center. Terp, sophomore Mandy Pascual notched a career-best 9.9 on the uneven parallel bars, placing her tied for sixth in the Maryland's all-time record book.
Maryland started the night out on the vault. Freshman all-arounder, Rachel Martinez placed second with her career-best, 9.8. She came behind West Virginia's Amanda Halovanic who posted a 9.850. Maryland compiled a team total of 48.375 on the vault.
The Terps gained control of the meet on the second event, the uneven parallel bars. Pascual's record setting 9.9 was accompanied by teammate, sophomore Leah Brill's 9.825. Brill, the 2002 EAGL Rookie of the Year, tied her career high with the mark. Both junior Rachel Sibert and freshman Kristi Skowronski posted a respectable 9.750.
Junior Sarah Hoenig, a 2002 NCAA Regional Participant, posted a team high 9.8 on the balance beam. Freshman Alexandria Gatch, who had placed second on the beam at the Governor's Cup on Feb. 8 came in with the next highest team score, a 9.725.
The floor portion of the meet was exciting as both Hoenig and freshman Cameron Logan scored a 9.850. The mark broke Hoenig's previous career high of 9.775 on the floor, and for Logan, it was the second time this season that she received a 9.850 on that event.
All-around competitors for the Terps were freshmen Martinez and Skowronksi. Mountaineer Dinorh Boyd won this category, with a 38.750. Martinez finished with a 37.700 for second place.
Terps return to Comcast Center for the Feb. 22 quad-meet, where Maryland will host Towson, James Madison and Texas Women's University. The meet which was previously scheduled for 7 p.m. has been moved to 8 p.m. Admission to the quad meet is free.
