VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Maryland women's soccer team and the WUSA's Philadelphia Charge played to a 1-1 tie this past Sunday afternoon at Villanova University.
Maryland freshman sensation and Mid-Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio) headed home the Terps' goal in the 30th minute off a corner kick from freshman Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.) to give Maryland the 1-0 lead.
Charge rookie Deliah Arrington out of Clemson scored late in the second half to equalize the score at 1-1. Another rookie, second-round pick Erin Misaki, was able to control a loose ball in the penalty area, turn and take a low shot that forced the Maryland goalkeeper to make a diving save to her right. However, the loose ball went right to the feet of Arrington, who was able to knock it home.
"It was great for our program to get this type of team effort," said Maryland head Shannon Higgins-Cirovski. "Playing to a 1-1 tie with the Charge will help our confidence and shows that we can play with anyone.
"Our defense was very good and our midfield battled all day. We played as a full unit. I was very happy with our different formations on defense and pleased with our overall movement of the ball."
The Terps return to action as they face Virginia in their second spring game on Saturday, April 5 at 4:30 p.m.
