280 Student-Athletes Earn ICA Honor Roll Status

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A total of 280 Maryland student-athletes earned a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in either the fall or spring semesters, earning them Intercollegiate Athletics Honor Roll status, Athletics Director Deborah A. Yow announced today.
"We're tremendously proud of our student-athletes who have achieved such success on the field and in the classroom," said Yow. "This is an indication that our student-athletes, coaches and staff have made a great commitment to making sure our focus and perspective are in the right place."
A school-record 68 student-athletes recorded a 4.0 GPA for either the Fall 2002 or Spring 2003 semester. The 416 occurrences in which a student-athlete earned a 3.0 or above in either of the two semesters was also a record-high.
A number of the Terrapin squads that had outstanding seasons on the field also were among the top achievers on the honor-roll lists. Teams in men's lacrosse (24), women's lacrosse (15) and men's soccer (eight) reached the NCAA Final Four in their respective sport, while the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl champion Terrapin football team had 27 student-athletes honored. The 25 football players who made the Honor Roll in Spring 2003 are the most in the tenure of head coach Ralph Friedgen.
Of the 21 sports counted (totals for track and field include indoor and outdoor track as well as cross country), 14 reached double figures in the number of honor roll student-athletes. The total of 280 in the 2002-03 academic year was an increase of 20 percent over the season before.
