COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior Keeley Dowling headed in a pass from Sue Flamini in the 108th minute to list No. 23 Tennessee (also ranked No. 11 by Soccer America) to a 2-1 victory on Day 2 of the Maryland/adidas Classic.
Playing an early morning game at 10 a.m., due to the arrival of Hurricane Isabel later this afternoon, Tennessee was in control much of the game. Dowling had given the Lady Vols a 1-0 lead as she converted a header off a corner kick from Ali Christoph in the 38th minute.
William & Mary got even just four minute into the second half as Lydia Sturgis scored on a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1 in the 50th minute. Sturgis broke free of the Tennessee defense and took a nice pass from Erica Cooper in the box and beat Lady Vol keeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart.
Tennessee had several chances late in the second half and in overtime before Dowling finished off the game with her fifth goal of the season.
The game was played with 25-30 mile per hour wins forcing the game to be played low to the ground at times. The rain held off until just after the game.
Maryland defeated Loyola, 1-0, on Wednesday's opening game -- which was re-scheduled from Thursday, due to the hurricane.
Action continues on Saturday, Sept. 20, in the 2003 Maryland/adidas Classic as the tournament moves to the SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md. In the opening game at 5 p.m., Loyola takes on William & Mary. That will be followed by the Maryland-Tennessee game at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free to both games. For directions of more information please check www.mdsoccerplex.com.
