
Volleyball Travels To Florida Atlantic This Weekend

The University of Maryland women's volleyball team (1-2, 0-0) will travel to Florida Atlantic University this weekend for its first road matches of the year. Florida Atlantic hosts the two-day round-robin tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., which also includes University of South Florida and The Citadel.

DiLivio Delivers
Back from a redshirt season in 2002, junior Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) has posted 38 kills and 41 digs in three matches for the Terps, including a career-best 24 digs against Tennessee on August 29. In her first action since the 2001 season, DiLivio led the tournament in kills and was selected to the Maryland Invititational all-tournament team.
Top Terps
Senior Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) has also put up solid numbers for the Terrapins thus far, compiling 34 kills in three matches. Sophomore Rachel Wagener's (Chesapeake, Va.) 24 kills in 52 attempts gives her the team's best attack percentage (.365).
Block Party
The Terrapins rank second in the ACC in blocks, thanks to the efforts of sophomore Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.), who had a stellar blocking performance at the Maryland Invitational. Smith amassed a tournament-leading 17 blocks in three matches, and while junior Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) has dished out 122 assists this season in her new role as starting setter, she has also provided the Terps with another major blocking presence. Huddleston (12), Smith (17) and Wagener (13) are all averaging over a block a game for the Terps.
The Citadel
The Citadel is 0-3 after dropping its first matches of the year against Charleston Southern, Navy and South Carolina State. Sophomore Stefanie Farris (36), senior Lindsey Hodge (36) and sophomore Samantha Parisi (31) lead the team in kills and the Bulldogs' senior setter Desiree Browning has amassed 120 assists in three matches. The Citadel is coached by Wendy Anderson, a former All-ACC player at Clemson. Friday's match will be the first meeting between The Citadel and the Terrapins.
South Florida
South Florida enters the tournament at 2-1 overall, with wins over Stetson and Georgia and a loss to Loyola-Chicago. The Bulls are led by junior middle blocker Shameka Mitchell, who has a team-high 65 kills and 11 blocks in three matches. Seniors Melayne Wootan, Fran Pozzi and Bonnye Glover, along with Mitchell, anchor the Bulls' offense. Wootan has 148 assists, while Pozzi and Glover have posted 38 and 35 kills, respectively. Florida Atlantic is coached by Nancy Mueller, and the Owls have a 1-0 all-time record against Maryland. The last time they met, Sept. 8, 1989, South Florida won in three games at the Western Kentucky Invitational.
Florida Atlantic
The Owls are off to a 0-3 start after dropping three matches at the Florida State Invitational, including a 3-1 loss to No. 15 Kansas State. Junior transfer Kelly Paiva, an outside hitter for the Owls, leads the team with 34 kills and 26 digs in three matches. Senior setter Jeana Boyle has also posted good numbers, dishing out 95 assists to go with 17 digs. Florida Atlantic is coached by Jody Brown, who is entering his eighth season at the helm of the Owls' program. The match will be the first meeting between the Terps and Florida Atlantic.
A Look Ahead
When the Terps return from their three-day road trip to Boca Raton, Fla., they will head to in-state rival Towson on Tuesday, Sept. 9. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
