COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jan. 6, 2004 Two Maryland field hockey players were selected to play on U.S. Junior National Teams which were recently announced by USA Field Hockey. Sophomore Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) was named to the Under-21 U.S. National Team and freshman Kristina Edmonds (Emmaus, Pa.) was named to the Under-19 squad. Sophomore Tiffany Marsh (Marathon, N.Y.) was selected an alternate.
The U21 and U19 squads were selected following A Camp team trials at the USA Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. Both teams will compete in various domestic and international events this year, including the USA Field Hockey Summer League and the annual JFK International Tournament in Virginia Beach for the U19 team. The U21 team will participate in an international tour and regional training centers and prepare players for next year's Pan American Junior Championships and the 2005 Junior World Cup.
Powley is a two-time All-American. A starter in every game for the Terps, she helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament semifinals in Amherst, Mass. Powley, who was named an All-ACC performer, was second on the team in assists with 14 and had 18 points overall.
Edmonds saw playing time as a key defensive reserve in 15 games this season, including the national semifinal game. Marsh also started every game for Maryland in the midfield. She tallied three goals, including the overtime game winner at North Carolina, and six assists on the season.
Maryland head coach Missy Meharg also participated at A camp and was back coaching in the USA elite system after taking some time off from the US coaching ranks.
"After taking some time off from the elite/international level I am totally inspired to again work with athletes of this calabre," said Meharg. "A camp was excellent. The youth of the USA is so encouraging. The USA staff (Beth Anders, Nick Conway and Andrew Griffiths, a Maryland assistant coach) prepared a great curriculum devoting lots of energy towards counter attacking, elimination and goal scoring...while selecting the type of athlete that can recover at speed, and play active defense."
Meharg led the Terps to a 20-4 record this season and were ranked No. 3 by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Terps also reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in school history.
