COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After its 5-4 overtime win over Duke last weekend, the Maryland field hockey team moved up a spot in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll, earning a No. 4 national ranking. Goalkeeper Kathryn Masson was also recognized for her performance against the Blue Devils as she was named National Rookie of the Week by www.womensfieldhockey.com.
Head coach Missy Meharg's Terps earn a top-five ranking for the fifth-consecutive week. Maryland is one of four ACC squads among the top five in the country with Wake Forest garnering the top spot. North Carolina is No. 2 in this week's poll after suffering its first loss of the season, while Duke dropped down to No. 5.
Making her first-career ACC start, Masson (Richmond, British Columbia) made a career-high nine saves in the win over Duke while allowing just two goals in 70 minutes of play. She also made key defensive stops on breakaways at crucial moments of the match.
The Rookie of the Week honor is the second this season for Maryland. Freshman Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) earned the honor on Sept. 20.
This weekend, the Terps face No. 8 Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 15 and No. 10 Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 17. Both games are on the road.
