The Game
The University of Maryland women's soccer team returns to the road vs. Wake Forest for a 7:00 p.m. game at W. Dennie Spry Stadium in Winston Salem, N.C.
After being on the road for every weekend in September, this will be the Terps first road game since beating Clemson 1-0 in Clemson, S.C. That game at Clemson was also Maryland's only previous Saturday game in 2004.
Away from College Park the Terps are a combined 4-2-0 on the season (2-2-0 away, 2-0-0 neutral).
This will be Maryland's second trip into North Carolina this season. The Terrapins dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in double-overtime at No. 2 North Carolina on Sept. 24.
A Look Back At Last Week
A 35-yard blast off the right foot of freshman midfielder Nikki Resnick tied her season and career highs with nine saves.
The Terps picked up their first home victory of the 2004 season, 2-1, over NC State on October 8 at Ludwig Field. The Wolfpack took and early 1-0 lead, but junior midfielder Mallory Mahar got the Terrapins even at 1-1 with her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Arias picked up the assist, her third of the season. Maryland would dominate the contest, but it was an own goal by NC State's Nicole Mayo that proved to be the difference in the game. Simone Dekker served a long cross into the box, looking for freshman Stevie Dunning. Mayo beat Dunning for the ball and tried to head it back to her keeper, but the ball bounced over Megan Connors' shoulder for the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute. The Terps had plenty of scoring chances in the second half. Mahar fired a shot off the crossbar and juniors Kimmy Francis and Danielle Malagari each hit the post on open shots.
Scouting The Demon Deacons
Wake Forest is 8-4-1 on the season, but only 2-4-0 in its last six games. On Wednesday night, the Demon Deacons were shutout, 3-0, at home by No. 2 North Carolina. It was the third time in their last five games that the Deacons have been shutout.
Overall Wake Forest has outscored its opponents 28-20 in 2004 and have posted a 223-152 shooting edge, including a 122-72 advantage in shots on goal.
The UM-WFU Series
The Terps and Demon Deacons have met 12 previous times, once each season from 1995-97, twice each in 1998 and 1999, and once each from 2000-03. Overall, the series is ties, 6-6, with the Terps outscoring Wake, 27-12 in the 12 games. Eight of the 12 matches all-time have ended in shutouts for the Terps or Deacs
Last season, the Terps snapped a four-game winless streak vs. the Demon Deacons with a 5-1 win at Ludwig Field. Wake, ranked 16th in the nation at the time, outshot Maryland in that contest 16-15, but were down 4-0 before scoring its only goal.
In the five meetings between the schools in Winston Salem, Wake Forest holds a 3-2 advantage, but the last time the Terps beat the Demon Deacons on their home field was Sept. 29, 1996, a 4-0 shutout for the No. 5 Terrapins.
Playing the Best
Once again, Higgins-Cirovski has scheduled one of the nation's most competitive schedules. The Terps take on five teams in this week's NSCAA poll including three of the top five. The Terps are at No. 2 North Carolina (1-2 loss, Sept. 24), at No. 3 Penn State (Oct. 27), host No. 5 Virginia (0-0 tie, Oct. 5), vs. No. 8 UCLA (2-1 win, Sept. 12), host No. 10 Duke (Oct. 23), host No. 14 Florida State (Oct. 13). ACC opponent Clemson was receiving votes when the Terps beat the Tigers 1-0 on Oct. 2. Wake Forest, which hosts Maryland on Oct. 16 has received votes in the past few polls. The orginal schedule also included a match with then No. 3 Washington on Sept. 17, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
During five of Higgins-Cirovski's six seasons at Maryland, she has led the Terps to at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team, leading Maryland to a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina last season, on Nov. 1, 2002. Most recently, the Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004.
Francis And Mahar Moving Up The Charts
With her six point effort at the Virginia Soccer Classic and a goal at Clemson, junior Kimmy Francis is now eighth on Maryland's all-time points chart with 50. Her three goals on the season have tied Francis for 10th on the career goals chart with 16.
Not just a goal scorer, Francis is also among the all-time leaders in assists. Her four assists on the season leads the team and has tied her for fifth on the career charts with 18. The next closest current Terp is junior Simone Dekker with seven career assists.
Also charging up the all-time charts is junior Mallory Mahar. With six goals on the season, Mahar is 11th on the all-time list, needing just one more to break into the top 10. Mahar is also moving up the career points list. She leads the team with 13 points, a career high, on the season and has 35 for her career, nine points away from 10th place.
Resnick Named to Soccer Buzz National Elite Team
Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Resnick was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week for her six save performance at Clemson on October 2. Resnick, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., posted her second shutout of the season in the 1-0 victory over the Tigers.
Two or Less
Opponents of the Terrapins have found goals few and far between so far this season. In fact, the Terps defense has been so stingy that no opponent has scored more than two goals in a game. The breakdown for goals scored on Maryland this season is - 0 Goals: 3; 1 Goal: 4; 2 Goals: 4.
During their last four games the Terps (2-0-2 in those four) have allowed only two goals; one each to NC State and No. 14 Florida State.
Dating back to the 2003 season, Maryland has not allowed an opponent to score more than two goals in 21 straight games. The last time the Terps allowed an opponent to score more than twice was October 5, 2003 against No. 1 North Carolina at Ludwig Field. The Tar Heels posted a 4-0 shutout. The last time a non-ACC opponent scored 3 or more goals in a game was Penn State, a 3-0 win, in College Park on Sept. 7, 2003.
