The Game
The University of Maryland women's soccer team travels US Rt. 50 to Annapolis, Md., to meet Navy in a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m. at the Glen Warner Soccer Facility.
This will be the Terps' first non-conference game since beating No. 3 UCLA at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12. On the season Maryland is unbeaten in non-conference action at 3-0-1.
Away from College Park the Terps are a combined 4-3-0 on the season (2-3-0 away, 2-0-0 neutral).
This will be Maryland's first-ever game at Navy. The five previous meetings have all been played in College Park.
A Look Back At Last Week
The Terps dropped a key ACC game at Wake Forest Saturday night 2-0. The Demon Deacons scored their first goal on a penalty kick by defender Alli Hunt in the 20th minute. Wake's Sarah Kozey scored the insurance goal, her 10th goal of the season, in the 58th minute off a punt from Deacon goalkeeper Heather Currie. For Maryland, Nikki Resnick made seven saves.
A 35-yard blast off the right foot of freshman midfielder Nikki Resnick tied her season and career highs with nine saves.
Scouting The Midshipmen
Navy is 8-6-1 on the season, 2-3-0 in Patriot League play. The Midshipmen are 7-0 at the Glen Warner Soccer Center so far in 2004, including 5-0 against non-conference opponents. In their seven home games, the Mids have only allowed four goals and have posted four shutouts. Sophomore forward Meggie Currie leads the team in points (17), assists (7) and shots (33), and is second in goals (5). Freshman Brigitte Fox is the leading goal scorer (6) and is second in points (26).
Overall Navy has outscored its opponents 27-16 in 2004 and have posted a 192-137 shooting edge, including a 100-69 advantage in shots on goal.
The UM-Navy Series
The Terps and the Mids have played five times previously with Maryland winning all five contests. The Terps have outscored Navy 17-1 in the series and did not allow a goal to the Midshipmen until last season.
Last season, the Terps defeated Navy by a 2-1 margin on Senior Night at Ludwig Field in College Park. Kimmy Francis scored her seventh goal of the season to give the Terps a 1-0 lead. Current Terrapins Simone Dekker and Lindsay Niehaus picked up assists on Maryland's second goal. For the Mids, then-freshman Molly Burd scored the lone goal with an assist being credited to fellow freshman Kristi Coonfare.
Playing The Best
Once again, Higgins-Cirovski has scheduled one of the nation's most competitive schedules. The Terps take on five teams in this week's NSCAA poll including three of the top five. The Terps are at No. 2 North Carolina (1-2 loss, Sept. 24), at No. 3 Penn State (Oct. 27), host No. 5 Virginia (0-0 tie, Oct. 5), vs. No. 8 UCLA (2-1 win, Sept. 12), host No. 10 Duke (Oct. 23), host No. 14 Florida State (Oct. 13). ACC opponent Clemson was receiving votes when the Terps beat the Tigers 1-0 on Oct. 2. Wake Forest, which hosts Maryland on Oct. 16 has received votes in the past few polls. The orginal schedule also included a match with then No. 3 Washington on Sept. 17, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
During five of Higgins-Cirovski's six seasons at Maryland, she has led the Terps to at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team, leading Maryland to a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina last season, on Nov. 1, 2002. Most recently, the Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004.
Francis And Mahar Moving Up The Charts
With her six point effort at the Virginia Soccer Classic and a goal at Clemson, junior Kimmy Francis is now eighth on Maryland's all-time points chart with 50. Her three goals on the season have tied Francis for 10th on the career goals chart with 16.
Not just a goal scorer, Francis is also among the all-time leaders in assists. Her four assists on the season leads the team and has tied her for fifth on the career charts with 18. The next closest current Terp is junior Simone Dekker with seven career assists.
Also charging up the all-time charts is junior Mallory Mahar. With six goals on the season, Mahar is 11th on the all-time list, needing just one more to break into the top 10. Mahar is also moving up the career points list. She leads the team with 13 points, a career high, on the season and has 35 for her career, nine points away from 10th place.
Two or Less
Opponents of the Terrapins have found goals few and far between so far this season. In fact, the Terps defense has been so stingy that no opponent has scored more than two goals in a game. The breakdown for goals scored on Maryland this season is - 0 Goals: 3; 1 Goal: 4; 2 Goals: 5.
Dating back to the 2003 season, Maryland has not allowed an opponent to score more than two goals in 22 straight games. The last time the Terps allowed an opponent to score more than twice was October 5, 2003 against No. 1 North Carolina at Ludwig Field. The Tar Heels posted a 4-0 shutout. The last time a non-ACC opponent scored 3 or more goals in a game was Penn State, a 3-0 win, in College Park on Sept. 7, 2003.
