Terps in the Polls
Maryland is ranked No. 5 in the nation this week, earning a top-three rating for the fourth-consecutive week. Maryland was the No. 1 team in the nation for the week of Sept. 20, earning the top spot in the rankings for the first time since the 2002 season.
The ACC continues to be the strongest conference in the nation as four ACC squads are ranked in the top five while all five are in the top 15. The only non-ACC team ranked in the top five is No. 4 Michigan State.
A Look At The Terps
Maryland's potent attack is bolstered by balanced scoring as 12 different Terrapins have tallied at least one goal. Junior Tiffany Marsh leads the way with 10 goals and 26 points. After dishing out a career-high tying three assists in the win at Virginia, junior Lauren Powley has team-best 10 assists.
Sophomore Christina Restivo continues to impress fans with her play. She is the team's top netminder posting four shutouts while helping the squad to seven overall, which leads the ACC. Her 1.11 goals against average ranks 11th in the nation. She had a career game in the Terps' win at Princeton, making a personal best 11 saves, many of them diving stops. Freshman Kathryn Masson made her first-career start vs. Quinnipiac, earning the win.
The only team in the country to return two first team All-Americans, the Terps return the majority of a squad that reached the 2004 NCAA Tournament semifinal game while recording the program's fourth 20-win season. Going 20-4 overall, Maryland ended the year ranked fourth in the nation on offense while fielding the fifth-best defense in the country. Ranked third in the final NFHCA Top 20 poll, the Terps return 15 letterwinners, including nine starters.
Missy Meharg is in her 17th year as head coach of the Terrapins. Under her tutelage, she has led Maryland to two national titles and five ACC titles while putting together a 275-87-9 record. A four time National Coach of the Year, she has also guided the Terps to all four 20-win seasons while mentoring the team to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NCAA Tournament final fours.
Last Time Out
Maryland picked up its first ACC win of the season with a commanding 5-0 win at Virginia, but fell to local-rival American, 3-1, to close out the weekend.
The Terps were dominant on both sides of the field, attempting 33 shots on attack while the defense limited the Cavaliers to just four shots in the game. Maryland scored three goals in the first half to mount an insurmountable, 3-0, advatange then tacked on two more to put the game away. Senior Sara Silvetti scored the game winning goal on a penalty corner in the 10th minute. Junior All-American Lauren Powley had a career-high tying three assists. Senior Colleen Barbieri scored her 50th career goal to become just the eighth player in school history with at least 50 tallies.
Unfortunately, the Terps were unable carry its momentum into the latter part of the weekend when they dropped their first game to the Eagles in the 30-year history of the series. Maryland led 1-0 at the break, but AU scored three goals in the second half to steal the game. The Terps had 25 shots and 15 penalty corners while limiting the Eagles to less than five attempts in each category. But Maryland had difficulty getting past AU goalkeeper Allison Fayfich who recorded 11 saves.

After snapping a six-game win streak when they fell to North Carolina, 2-1, on Sept. 25, the Blue Devils bounced back to defeat Radford and Davidson last weekend by a combined score of 23-0.
The Blue Devils' high-powered attacked is led by Nicole Dudek. She leads four double-digit scorers with 14 tallies. Katie Grant leads the squad with 38 points and 12 assists to go along with 13 goals. Duke recorded five double-digit scoring outings, outscoring its opponents, 72-13.
The Duke defense is ranked 11th in the nation, allowing 1.18 goals per game. In goal, the Blue Devils have looked to primarily two netminders with Christy Morgan logging the most minutes, carrying a 1.27 goals against average in seven starts. Caitlin Williams has started four games and boasts a 1.08 GAA.
Head coach Beth Bozman is in her second season at the Duke helm after spending 15 seasons at Princeton University. Last year, she led the Blue Devils to the program's best season ever, winning 20 games and reaching the championship game of the NCAA Tournament. Bozman is a 1976 graduate of Trenton State and has a 232-83-6 career record.
Last Meeting: Duke ended the Terps' run for a national championship title last year when the Blue Devils defeated Maryland, 4-2, in the NCAA Tournament semifinal game. Duke scored three goals in the first half to take a commanding 3-0 halftime lead. The Terps scored in the second period to make the score, 3-1, but the Blue Devils added another to push the lead back up to three goals. Maryland scored a second tally to get to within two, but could not get any closer. Barbieri scored both goals for the Terps, while the Blue Devils had four different scorers.
Series vs. Duke: Maryland leads the all-time series, 18-5-3, but have never lost to the Blue Devils in College Park. Last year was the first time the Terps suffered back-to-back losses to Duke.
Barbieri Moves Up Record Books
With her tally in the 5-0 win at Virginia, senior Colleen Barbieri became one of only eight players in school history to score at least 50 career goals. A 2002 first team All-American, she stands alone in eighth place all-time among Maryland goal scorers. Barbieri, the 2001 ACC Rookie of the Year, notched 17 goals her freshman year, a career high. Carla Tagliente hold the school record with 73 tallies which she scored from 1997-2000.
Barbieri has also amassed 117 career points during her time in College Park. She is five points behind Nadine Bennett who is in ninth place on the all-time list with 122.
Marsh Makes Move
Junior Tiffany Marsh has jumped out in front of a balanced Maryland scoring attack. She leads the team with 10 goals, a career high, and 26 points, tying a career high. She also has a team-leading three game-winning goals. This year, Marsh made the move from midfield to attack and has proven to be the right move for the Terps who have 12 different players with at least one goal.
van Leeuwen Earns National Honors
After scoring her first-career goal against Towson, freshman Janneke van Leeuwen went on to have a breakout weekend, leading the Terps with four goals on five shots and 10 points. She gave the Terps a 1-0 lead over Princeton after the teams were deadlocked for 25 minutes. She went on to score another goal in that game and also dished out two assists. In Maryland's come-from-behind victory at No. 14 Delaware, van Leeuwen's tally tied the game at 3-3 late in the second half.
Terp Attack
Boasting a balanced attack, 12 different Terps have tallied at least a goal with junior Tiffany Marsh leads the way with a career-high 10 goals. The Maryland offense notched at least three goals in 10 of its 13 games and has outscored its opponents, 55-13, so far this season. The Terps' offense ranks fifth in the nation as of Oct. 4 at 4.14 goals per game.
Defense!
What jumped right off the box score after the 2-0 win over Northwestern was the fact that the Maryland defense did not allow a Wildcat shot or a penalty corner for the game and it repeated that feat in the very next game vs. Towson. The Terps have allowed just two goals from Aug. 29-Sept. 17, a span of seven games. The defense also put together a streak of 191 minutes of shutout hockey, which was snapped in the win over Drexel. Maryland opponents have been limited to four shots or fewer seven times and one penalty corner or less six times.
With seven shutouts under their belt, the Terrapin defense is seventh in the nation as of Oct. 4, allowing just 1.00 goals per game.
Nifty (Hat) Trick
When sophomore All-American Paula Infante recorded her first-career hat trick in the 7-1 win at Princeton, she became just the second current Terp to accomplish that feat. Senior Anja Boettcher scored her second-career hat trick in the 7-1 win over Drexel. She also had a hat trick when she scored three in the 7-0 victory at UMass last year on Aug. 31.
Aye, Aye Captain
Seniors Kristin Harris and Sara Silvetti have been named team captains for the second-straight year. The two Pennsylvania natives have played in almost every game since 2001. Last year, both were named to the NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team.
Up Next
The Terps take a break from the ACC slate and hit the road for two contest against teams ranked among the top 10. Maryland closes out the home-and-home series with No. 8 Old Dominion on Oct. 15 in Norfolk, Va., then travel to face No. 9 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. It is the first-ever trip for Maryland to Ann Arbor.
