College Park, Md. -
The Game
The University of Maryland women's soccer team meets ACC foe NC State at Ludwig Field on Friday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m.
The match marks only the third game the Terps have played at Ludwig Field this season. Maryland is 0-1-1 at Ludwig in 2004, 0-1-2 at home overall. The team's first home game, a 1-1 tie with William & Mary was played at the Maryland Soccer Complex in Germantown, Md. This past Tuesday (Oct. 5) the Terrapins battled No. 6 Virginia to a 0-0 tie. Two other scheduled home matches, vs. Washington (Sept. 17) and Loyola (Md.) (Sept. 28) were cancelled due to incement weather conditions.
A Look Back at the Last Week
Maryland battled the sixth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers to a 0-0 tie Tuesday night at Ludwig Field. With limited depth the Terrapins relied on a stingy defense and an opportunistic offense to dictate the pace of the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Resnick turned in another outstanding performance, stopping seven Virginia shots to record her second consecutive shutout.
The Terps took to the road for the fourth consecutive weekend and returned to College Park with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, October 2 at Riggs Field. Junior midfielder Nikki Resnick made six saves and the Terps defense made a key team save in the final minutes to preserve the victory. The win was Maryland's first conference victory of the season.
Maryland's match with Loyola (Md.), scheduled for Tuesday, September 28, was cancelled due to inclement weather. This was the second home match the Terps have been forced to cancel due to weather conditions. Lightning and tornado warnings forced the cancellation of Maryland's match with No. 3 Washington on Friday, September 17.
Scouting the Wolfpack The Wolfpack,7-3-2 on the season, is coming off a 1-0 loss to ACC newcomer Virginia Tech on Sunday, October 3. The Hokies scored the game's lone goal in the fifth minute of play. NC State was able to put four shots on goal, but none could find the net.
NC State has outscored its opponents 26-10 in 2004 and have posted a 174-104 shooting edge, including a 91-41 shot advantage in the first half.
The UMD-NCSU Series
NC State leads the all-time series with the Terps 11-4-4.
The Maryland-NC State series dates back to the start of the Terps' varsity program in 1987. In fact, NC State, along with Virginia and North Carolina are the only teams to have played Maryland at least once in each varsity season for the past 17 years.
Last season, Maryland dominated the entire game, but could not find a way to put the ball in the net as NC State escaped with a 1-0 victory. The Terps outshot the Wolfpack 18-4 and held a 16-1 edge in corner kicks.
The last time in College Park, NC State pulled out a 2-1 win in double overtime. The lone Terrapin goal was scored by then-freshman Simone Dekker. The game was a physical contest with the Wolfpack racking up a 20-6 foul margin and three yellow cards.
All-Time at Ludwig Field
Since its opening in 1995, Ludwig Field has proved to be a tremendous home-field advantage for the Terps women's soccer team. All-time Maryland is 84-25-5 (.759) at Ludwig Field.
Playing the Best
Once again, Head Coach Shannon Higgins-Cirovski has scheduled one of the nation's most competitive schedules. The Terps take on five teams in this week's NSCAA poll including three of the top five. The Terps are at No. 2 North Carolina (1-2 loss, Sept. 24), at No. 3 Penn State (Oct. 27), host No. 6 Virginia (0-0 tie, Oct. 5), vs. No. 8 UCLA (2-1 win, Sept. 12), host No. 9 Duke (Oct. 23), host No. 17 Florida State (Oct. 13). ACC opponent Clemson was receiving votes when the Terps beat the Tigers 1-0 on Oct. 2. Wake Forest, which hosts Maryland on Oct. 16 is receiving votes this week. The orginal schedule also included a match with then No. 3 Washington on Sept. 17, but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.
During five of Higgins-Cirovski's six seasons at Maryland, she has led the Terps to at least one upset win or tie of a top-10 ranked team, leading Maryland to a 4-3 win at No. 9 Duke on Sept. 19, 1999 and a 2-1 victory over Clemson on Oct. 17, 1999; a 3-1 win over No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 29, 2000; a 1-0 overtime over No. 8 Clemson on Oct. 13, 2001 and a 1-1 tie at No. 2 North Carolina last season, on Nov. 1, 2002. Most recently, the Terps stunned No. 3 UCLA 2-1 at the Virginia Soccer Classic on Sept. 12, 2004.
Francis and Mahar Moving Up the Charts
With her six point effort at the Virginia Soccer Classic and a goal at Clemson, junior Kimmy Francis is now eighth on Maryland's all-time points chart with 50. Her three goals on the season have tied Francis for 10th on the career goals chart with 16.
Not just a goal scorer, Francis is also among the all-time leaders in assists. Her four assists on the season leads the team and has tied her for fifth on the career charts with 18. The next closest current Terp is junior Simone Dekker with seven career assists.
Also charging up the all-time charts is junior Mallory Mahar. With five goals on the season, Mahar is 12th on the all-time list, needing just two more to break into the top 10. Mahar is also moving up the career points list. She leads the team with 11 points on the season and has 33 for her career, 11 points away from 10th place.
Resnick Named to Soccer Buzz National Elite Team for Week of Oct. 6
Sophomore goalkeeper Nikki Resnick was named to the Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week for her six save performance at Clemson on October 2. Resnick, a native of Boca Raton, Fla., posted her second shutout of the season in the 1-0 victory over the Tigers.
