The Maryland field hockey team garnered the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament, which is held at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Terps play third-seeded Duke on Friday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. The championship game will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7 and will be televised on the ACC's Regional Sports Network. Maryland will be looking for its sixth conference title.
The Terps garnered the second seed after winning the tie breaker. Duke and Wake Forest were tied with Maryland for second place in the ACC standings. The Demon Deacons were seeded fourth and face fifth-seeded Virginia in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 4. The winner of that game faces ACC regular season champion North Carolina on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
The ACC is the toughest conference in the nation, as the top four spots in the national top 20 are conference squads. All five teams are ranked among the top 20. In the history of the ACC Tournament, the tournament finalists have gone on to reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four 22 times. Sixteen of those teams have advanced to the national finals and nine times the NCAA Tournament Champion was an ACC Tournament Championship team. Of the 21 teams crowned ACC Champion all-time, seven have also captured the NCAA Tournament title the same year.
Maryland is just one of three teams to ever win the ACC title, capturing the crown five times, including four-straight years from 1998-2001. UNC holds the conference record with 14 tournament titles and Wake Forest claimed its only two the last two years.
