COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head volleyball coach Janice Kruger announced today the signing of Tedi Doucet, Maggie Schmelzle and Meredith Doyle to National Letters of Intent to play for the Terrapins beginning in 2005.
Doucet, hailing from Austin, Texas, was a four-year letterwinner and setter at Westlake High School. An honorable mention all-district selection in 2003, Doucet was named to three all-tournament teams in 2004, including Most Valuable Player of the Duncanville tournament. Following her senior season, Doucet was named to the all-state team and well as the state tournament all-tournament team. She was selected Most Valuable Player of Westlake's squad as well as the district. Doucet has also excelled in the classroom, as she is a four-time academic all-district selection and a talented writer. Doucet was also recruited by North Carolina, Ole Miss, Rice and Pennsylvania.
"Tedi's years of setting experience have developed her into a strong, confident, on-court leader," Kruger said. "Her strength as a setter is three-fold. She can organize her offense very well, deliver stable sets from anywhere on the floor and set a fast offensive system of play. Tedi's all-around volleyball skills are also strong."
Schmelzle, a middle blocker/outside hitter from Cincinnati, Ohio, was a four-year varsity player for perennial prep powerhouse St. Ursula Academy. A captain for the Bulldogs in 2004, Schmelzle was named the Girls Greater Cincinnati League's (GGCL) Player of the Year and was a first team all-state and all-city selection. A member of the senior showcase all-star team, Schmelzle was also named a Southwest Ohio District Scholar. In 2003, she was a second team GGCL and a second team all-district selection. A former teammate of current Terp Beth Gillming at St. Ursula, Schmelzle played on the 2003 National Champion Bulldog squad. Schmelzle was also recruited by Illinois, Duke, Cincinnati, Kentucky and Loyola Marymount.
"Maggie brings outstanding competitive playing experience to Maryland. Her strength is her all-around skill," Kruger said. "Maggie's natural and relaxed passing form will provide solid ball control. She has the ability to hit strong tactical attacks from all along the net and possesses excellent court sense."
Doyle, a middle blocker out of McLean, Va., will join the Terps out of Langley High School. Selected as Liberty District's Most Valuable Player, Doyle was a first team all-Liberty district honoree as well as an all-tournament team member. Doyle was a Washington Post all-metro honorable mention selection in 2003 and set the record for career blocks at Langley. Doyle chose Maryland over Florida State, Kentucky, Auburn, Georgia and Villanova.
"At 6-4, Meredith's agility and physical presence will allow her to dominant the net.both offensively and defensively. Her blocking skill, movement and quick attack will be a constant threat for opposing teams," Kruger said.
