CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The seventh-seeded University of Maryland volleyball team defeated 10th seed Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Tournament Thursday night in Memorial Gymnasium, 3-1 (28-30, 30-26, 30-22, 30-27). Sarah Treadwell tied a career-high with 21 kills and also had 18 digs to lead the Terrapins, who will face No. 2 seed Miami on Friday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinal round.

Treadwell committed just three errors on 41 swings and hit .439, while Rachel Wagener also had a standout night for the Terrapins with 17 kills, six blocks and a .682 attack percentage. Jennifer Dewalt and Stephanie Smith also reached double-digit kills, registering 14 and 10, respectively. They each also had six blocks.

Maria DiLivio and Beth Gillming led the defensive effort, as Gillming recorded a match-high 19 digs and DiLivio posted 14. DiLivio also added five kills and a block, while Gillming tallied her team-high 21st service ace of the year.

Maryland fell behind by as many as eight points early in game one and trailed 7-14 when sophomore Teryn Papp entered the game to serve for the Terps. Two kills from Sarah Treadwell and two service aces from Papp ignited the Terps and began a 7-3 run that pulled them to within three points at 14-17. From there, the teams traded points until Maryland was able to cut the margin to just one point on a Maria DiLivio kill, making the score 26-27. After Wake Forest called a timeout, the Demon Deacons managed to notch three points to the Terps' two, and Wake took the first game, 30-28. Maryland was out-hit, .341-.233, and out-blocked, 6-2. The Terrapins were led in game one by Rachel Wagener with five kills.

The two teams traded sideouts to open the second game, until Maryland was able to string together a Jade Brown solo block and Rachel Wagener/Aimee Huddleston block assist to take a three-point lead at 16-13. The Terps continued to pressure the Demon Deacons with strong blocking and forced Wake to take a timeout after building the lead to five points at 20-15. Led by Wagener with five kills and Dewalt and Stephanie Smith with four kills apiece, the Terps did not relinquish their lead and took evened the match with a 30-26 second-game victory.

Maryland did not trail in game two, as the Terps notched the opening point off of a Treadwell kill and never looked back. Treadwell was stellar in game three, as she hit .500 and finished with eight kills. Also making a difference for the Terps in the third game was libero Beth Gillming's acrobatic digs - she had six in the game and Maryland cruised to the 30-22 victory.

The Terps' scoring started in game four with a Beth Gillming ace and the Terps would go on to out-hit Wake Forest, .318-.289, to take a 30-27 victory and clinch the match.

Terp setter Aimee Huddleston finished the match with 63 assists, 11 digs, two blocks and two kills.

Freshman outside hitter Jade Brown posted eight kills, a block assist and a solo block for the victorious Terps.

Wake Forest was led by Kim Stern with 15 kills.

Maryland will face second-seeded Miami at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19, in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Tournament in Charlottesville. Gametracker is available on www.theacc.com and www.umterps.com
