The Maryland volleyball team will travel to State College, Pa., to play Towson University on Friday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m. in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terrapins will make their sixth NCAA Tournament appearance after earning an automatic berth by winning their second-consecutive ACC Tournament title.
No. 2 seed Penn State (27-2) was selected as a host site as Friday's matches feature the Nittany Lions vs. American (7 p.m.) and the Terps vs. Towson. First and second matches will be played at Penn State's Rec Hall.
Towson is 25-8 on the year after most recently dropping a match to No. 12 Florida, 3-2, on Nov. 27. The Tigers earned an automatic berth to the tournament after winning their first-ever Colonial Athletic Association tournament title.
Maryland (17-14) has won 10-straight matches against Towson, including a 3-0 (30-26, 33-31, 30-22) sweep in Comcast Center Pavilion on Sept. 15. The Terrapins lead the all-time series with Towson, 22-1.
Penn State earned the second overall seed after winning the Big Ten Conference and compiling a 27-2 record in 2004. The Nittany Lions' only losses were at the hands of then-No. 1 Minnesota and then-No. 7 Ohio State and they are currently on an 11-match win streak.
American (24-6) earned an automatic berth by winning its fourth-consecutive Patriot League title.
