Despite coming back from a two-game deficit to force a decisive fifth game, the University of Maryland volleyball team fell to the University of Miami, 3-2 (30-22, 30-18, 20-30, 21-30, 15-7), Friday in the Knight Complex.
Jade Brown and Sarah Treadwell led the Terps offensively, as they each tallied 14 kills. Treadwell added seven digs and a block, while Rachel Wagener recorded 12 kills and five blocks.
Miami jumped out to a 7-3 lead in game one, but the Terrapins fought back to tie the score at 12 on a Sarah Treadwell kill. From there, however, the Hurricanes pulled away again on the strength of a .303 team attack percentage. Treadwell finished the game with four kills, while Jade Brown contributed six first-game winners for Maryland, but the Hurricanes took game one, 30-22.
Maryland (11-12, 6-7 ACC) fell into another hole at the start of game two, as Miami took an early 5-1 lead. Despite coming back to tie the score at six, Maryland later struggled against Miami's block - the `Canes notched seven in the second game alone - and was held to a negative attack percentage. Eventually, Miami took a two games to none lead with the 30-18 second-game victory.
In game three, a Beth Gillming service ace tied the game at four and then the Terps took the lead when Stephanie Smith and Jade Brown combined for a block. From there, the Terrapins never trailed again and out-blocked Miami, 10-2, for the 30-20 third-game win. Sarah Treadwell had four kills in the game, while Jennifer Dewalt recorded five third-game blocks.
Rachel Wagener earned the first Terrapin point in game four with a kill and Maryland never relinquished the lead again as it won the game, 30-21. Wagener led the Terps with four kills, while Maria DiLivio dug five balls to lead Maryland defensively in game four.
Maryland's comeback effort stopped short in game five, as the Terps could not overcome an early deficit and lost the game, 15-7.
Aimee Huddleston finished with 50 assists, three kills and 12 digs for the Terps, while Maria DiLivio had a team-high 19 digs.
Stephanie Smith and Jennifer Dewalt also had strong outings, as Smith finished with eight kills and eight blocks (two solo) and Dewalt posted seven kills and seven blocks (one solo).
Maryland returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 7, in a 1 p.m. match at Florida State.
