The University of Maryland took a 1-0 advantage into the half, but top-seed North Carolina posted three second-half goals to down the Terps by a 3-1 margin in today's ACC Field Hockey Championship title game. Kelsey Keeran's goal with 28:33 remaining in the second half proved to be the game-winner, as the Tar Heel forward deflected a Rachel Dawson pass to the near post for a 2-1 North Carolina lead.
Tiffany Marsh got Maryland on the board late in the first half, as both defenses limited scoring opportunities. Marsh converted the last of the Terrapins' six first-half penalty corner, taking an Anja Boettcher pass and beating North Carolina's Katy Tran to the far post for a 1-0 halftime lead.
Carolina answered quickly to start the second half, with Laree Beans getting the Tar Heels on the board less than three minutes into the second frame. Beans knocked in a loose ball in front of the Maryland net for her 3rd goal of the season.
Keeran put the Tar Heels up for good less than four minutes later with the eventual game-winner, before Laura Douglas tacked on an insurance goal off a Rachel Dawson pass. Dawson finished the game with two assists and, along with teammates Keeran (Tournament MVP), Naomi Weatherald and Katy Tran, was named to the All-ACC Tournament team.
Maryland's Paula Infante and Kristin Harris were also named to the All-Tournament team, while Terp freshman Janneke van Leeuwen was named the 2004 ACC Freshman of the Year in the post-game ceremonies.
