Terps Finish Fifth at Spring Season-Opener

MIAMI, Fla. - Senior Marie Harper led Maryland with an 11th-place finish individually to help the Terrapins place fifth in the team standings Tuesday at the Miccosukee Championship hosted by Florida International University.
Harper (West Point, Va.) closed with an 81 in the third and final round, finishing with a 54-hole total of 237. It was the third time in five tournaments this year that Harper has led the Terrapins in scoring in an event.
As a team, Maryland scored 317, posting the same score it had in Monday's second round. The Terps' 54-hole total of 955 was one shot ahead of Toledo and one behind host Florida International.
Laura Cross and Ashley Deatherage finished first and second for SMU in the individual standings, leading the Mustangs to the team victory. SMU's 309 total in the final round gave the Mustangs a 936 total and a one-shot victory over Florida Atlantic. Michigan was third at 943.
Freshmen Kate Stepanek (Guilford, Conn.) and Jessica Reno (Wilmington, Del.) tied for the best round of the day individually for Maryland, each carding a 5-over-par 78. Stepanek rallied to finish in a tie for 22nd at 241, while Reno was tied for 51st at 250.
Kristen McCurdy (Hockessin, Del.) tied for 24th at 242 for the Terps after shooting 80 on Tuesday, as Katie Redeker (Pepper Pike, Ohio) finished tied for 42nd at 247. Kelly MacWhinnie, competing as an individual, finished tied for 58th at 87-85-87--259.
Maryland's women's team next plays Feb. 27-29 in the Edwin Watts Spring Invitational at Southern Pines, N.C.
