Seven Terrapins Gridders Named Academic All-ACC

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland placed seven football players on the list of the Atlantic Coast Conference's All-Academic honorees for 2003 the league announced today by commissioner John Swofford.

Tight end Jeff Dugan, center Kyle Schmitt, placekicker Nick Novak and specialist Steve Suter head up the list on the offensive side of the ball. Defensive tackle C.J. Feldheim, safety Dennard Wilson and punter Adam Podlesh are among those listed on defense for the Gator Bowl Champion Terrapins.

Fourteen players who earned first or second team all-conference honors this past season also secured spots on the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic football team. To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

The league's past two ACC Players of the Year - NC State's Philip Rivers (2003) and Virginia's Matt Schaub (2002) - and P.J. Daniels, the ACC's leading rusher this past season with 1,447 yards, are among the league's academic honorees as are two players who earned All-America recognition this past season - Florida State linebacker Michael Boulware and Virginia placekicker Connor Hughes. Other first or second team All-ACC selections named were Duke's Chris Douglas, Florida State's David Castillo, Georgia Tech's, Eric Henderson and James Butler, Maryland's Nick Novak, Steve Suter, Jeff Dugan and Adam Podlesh and Virginia's Hughes and Chris Canty.

Duke's Chris Douglas, the league's third-leading rusher last fall with 1,138 yards and a three-time All-ACC Academic team selection, heads up a list of 12 players that are repeaters from last year's All-Academic team. Other repeaters from the 2002 team are Clemson's William Henry, Duke's Drew Strojny, Florida State's Boulware, Maryland's Novak and Suter, North Carolina's Doug Justice and Jeb Terry, NC State's Austin Herbert, Virginia's Schaub, Wake's Brad White and Quintin Williams.
