
Maryland Drops Water Polo Match To Villanova, 14-6

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Maryland women's water polo team fell to Villanova 14-6 Friday evening at the Villanova Swim Complex. The loss was the Terps' sixth in a row and second of the season to the Wildcats.
Maryland and Villanova alternated goals in the first quarter, with seniors Laura Nolan (Towson, Md.) and Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) and sophomore Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) each scoring a goal for the Terps. The score was tied 3-3 after the first, but the Wildcats began to pull away in the second quarter, scoring the next four goals before Kuzniar scored her second goal of the game with 23 seconds left in the half. Maryland went into halftime down 7-4.
The Terps came out strong for the second half, with senior Meghan Graves (Kennett Square, Pa.) scoring the first goal of the third quarter. But the Wildcats came storming back and scored three more goals before the end of the period to take a 10-5 lead. Villanova scored twice more in the fourth quarter before Corwin notched her second goal of the game and team-leading sixth of the season. Villanova added two more goals, and the Wildcats won 14-6.
Sophomore goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) had ten saves and three steals while giving up all 14 Villanova goals. Graves had a team-high three steals, while Nolan and senior Kelly Haisfield (New Carrollton, Md.) had two apiece. Kuzniar, senior Sarah Wahba (Crofton, Md.) and sophomore Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.) each added one steal. Kuzniar had a team-high two assists, while Wahba and Elyse Corwin had one apiece.
The loss dropped the Terps to 0-6 with just two games remaining in the regular season. They return to the pool tomorrow against Princeton and Bucknell at Princeton's DeNuzio Pool. The Terps take on the Tigers at 11 a.m., and they face the Bison at 2 p.m.
