COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland head coach Missy Meharg has announced that high school standouts Kendall Beveridge and Katie Mockus will be joining the NCAA Tournament semifinalists Terrapin Field Hockey team for the 2004 season.
A 5-8 forward-midfielder from Medford, N.J., Mockus was an All-South Jersey first team selection as a senior and a two-time all-county honoree. A three-year starter at nationally-ranked Shawnee High School, she was named Courier Post Player of the Week and a Philadelphia Inquirer Player to Watch. She helped her team to two Central Jersey Group IV Championships, en route to All-Group IV honors. Mockus is a Level I NFHA Futures Participant and won the silver medal at the National Hockey Festival in 2002 and 2003 as a member of the Under-19 Spirit of USA Club team.
"Katie comes to College Park with an outstanding background in field hockey. The state of New Jersey yields some of the best talent in the nation," said Meharg. "She has a natural game sense and is an effective scorer. We are so pleased to have another Shawnee High School alum at Maryland. She follows in the footsteps of some of the great Terps like Kelli Visco and Laurie Vile, who both hailed from Shawnee."
Beveridge is from nearby Frederick, Md., and will graduate from Governor Thomas Johnson High School. She was named county Player of the Year, first team All-Frederick News Post and All-Frederick Gazette. A three year starter, she was picked first team All-Monocacy Valley Athletic League and earned second team all-state honors.
"Kendall is a very intellectual athlete with enormous potential on the field," stated Meharg. "She is naturally talented and a very tenacious defender. She possesses agility and quickness coupled with game sense."
Both Mockus and Beveridge are National Honor Society members. Mockus was named to the Honor Roll and is enrolled in the Honors program. Beveridge is part of the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Program.
Mockus and Beveridge join Kimberly Zeigler of Fallston, Md., for the 2004 season.
