CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The University of Maryland track and field teams completed day one of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday in Chapel Hill, N.C. Harold Manning highlighted the Terps first day at the conference meet, finishing second and qualifying for the finals in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.25.
The North Carolina women and Florida State men lead after the first day of competition on Belk Track at Fetzer Field on the campus of the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heel women are out in front with 81.5 points. Florida State sits in second with 39, followed closely by NC State with 36 points. Georgia Tech is in fourth (28), Duke in fifth (26), Wake Forest sixth (24), Clemson seventh (21), Virginia eighth (16.5) and Maryland ninth (1). The Seminole men are in first with 52 total points followed by NC State in second with 40 points. Clemson sit in third with 39 points, while North Carolina is in fourth with 38 points. Georgia Tech is in fifth (23), Virginia sixth (22), Duke seventh (14) and Wake Forest (6) eighth.
Also qualifying for tomorrow's finals was Rob Frelow, whose time of 47.74 in the 400-meter dash was good for sixth place in the preliminary heat. Michael Porter will run the finals of the 1,500 meters after a time of 3:53.62 in the prelims.
John Collins and Beau Fay had a good showings in the discus, finishing ninth (144-02) and 11th (136-10), respectively.
For the women, several Terrapins qualified for tomorrow's finals. Teyarnte' Carter will run in the finals of the 100-meter dash after a prelimary time of 12.19 (eighth), while Toni Jefferson and Tia Burley will run the 400-meter dash tomorrow after times of 54.48 (fifth) and 54.71 (eigth), respectively.
In the field events, Heather Houston finished ninth in the long jump (18-09.75), and Labelle Hillgrove was 11th in the discus (135-09).
Competition continues Saturday at the ACC Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.
