COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Marking the official end of the 2003-04 campaign, the Maryland field hockey team gathered for the team's annual end-of-the year banquet to celebrate the successes of the 2003 season. Highlighting the evening at the Maryland Golf Course was the announcement of the team awards by 15-year head coach Missy Meharg. Freshman Paula Infante was selected the squad's Katie Kauffman Award, presented to the outstanding player of the year, and junior Kristin Harris was named the Kateri Simon Unsung Hero.
The team's goals and points leader, Infante (Santiago, Chile) had one of the most prolific scoring seasons in team history. Her 19 tallies tied for the seventh most single-season total in school history and her 45 points was 15th in the nation in 2003. Infante received a number of honors at season's end, having been selected first team All-ACC, first team All-America and to the NCAA and ACC All-Tournament teams.
Starting in every game at midfield, Harris (Lititz, Pa.) served as co-captain of the squad. The Terps' quiet leader, she was named second team All-Mid Atlantic Region by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for the second-straight year.
The Terrapins are coming off of one of the most successful seasons in school history, reaching the NCAA Tournament semifinals for the ninth time while making their ninth-consecutive national championship appearance and 17th overall. Maryland looks to return to the national stage and vie for its fourth NCAA title when it kicks off the 2004 slate on Saturday, Aug. 28 at Boston College.
