Harper, Redeker in Top 20 at ACC Women's Tourney

CLEMMONS, N.C. - Seniors Marie Harper and Katie Redeker each fired 3-over-par rounds of 74 to lead Maryland finishers Friday after the opening round of the Atlantic Coast Conference women's golf championship being played at the Salem Glen Golf and Country Club.

Harper and Redeker were tied for 16th individually after Friday's round, the first of three rounds in the championships.

As a team, Maryland posted a score of 306, marking the third straight time the Terps had that score on the Salem Glen layout in ACC Tournament play. The Terps scored 306 in the second and third rounds of last year's tournament. Maryland was in sixth place in the team standings after the first round, three strokes behind NC State.

Harper had one birdie and one bogey in shooting an even-par 35 on the back nine of her round Friday. Her best round previously at Salem Glen in the ACCs was a 75. Redeker turned the front nine in 37 and birdied the par-3 17th hole to come in with her 74.

Also for Maryland, freshman Kate Stepanek was tied for 27th after an opening-round 78, junior Kristen McCurdy was tied for 30th after an 80 and freshman Jessica Reno shot an 81 to place 32nd overall.

Duke had four players in the top nine to shoot a 5-under-par team score of 279 and take a six-shot lead over North Carolina. Wake Forest was in third at 290 after the opening round.

Meaghan Francella of North Carolina fired a 5-under 66 to lead after the opening day, one shot better than Brittany Lang of Duke. Five players had subpar rounds on Friday.

The ACC Championship concludes this weekend with single rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
