GLEN ALLEN, Va. -
Senior Marie Harper fired a 36 on the back nine to complete a round of 4-over-par 76 to lead Maryland finishers in Friday's first round of the 2004 Spider Spring Invitational women's golf tournament being hosted by the University of Richmond.
Harper was tied for 11th after 18 holes of the 54-hole event, being played at the Hunting Hawk Golf Course. The score was one shot off her best round of the spring season, a 75 posted at the spring opener in Miami, Fla.
As a team, Maryland stood in eighth place after the first round with a 318 total. Freshman Jessica Reno tied for 32nd with an 80, after shooting a 38 on the back nine Friday. The three other Terps on the trip, Katie Redeker, Kate Stepanek and Kristen McCurdy, each posted scores of 81 to tie for 38th individually.
James Madison led the team standings with a 296, one shot better than UNC Wilmington. Wilmington's Amelie Farrah set a women's course record with a 4-under-par 68 to lead the individual scoring after the first round. Carol Green of James Madison was the only other player to break par, finishing at 1-under 71.
The tournament continues on Saturday and Sunday.
