VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Maryland women's water polo team finished fifth at the Southern Division Championships, losing the fourth-place game 13-2 to Villanova this afternoon. The fifth-seeded Terps, who lost to the fourth-seeded Wildcats 9-4 in the first game yesterday before falling to Princeton and Bucknell, ended their season 0-12.
Unlike the first game against Villanova, when the Terps scored two goals in the first quarter, the Wildcats blanked Maryland in the entire first half, taking a 7-0 lead into halftime. The shutout continued for 4:46 in the third quarter before senior Kelly Haisfield (New Carrollton, Md.) finally scored the Terps' first goal of the game. It was 8-1 at the end of the third period, and the Wildcats would make it 10-1 before sophomore Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) scored with four minutes to go in the game. Villanova won 13-2.
Corwin had eight saves and allowed eight goals before turning the goal over to freshman Stacy Glantz (Roslyn, N.Y.), who allowed the final five Wildcat scores and had two saves.
Princeton won the Southern Division with a 7-6 win over George Washington in the championship game. Bucknell finished third after defeating Villanova 9-4.
