PRINCETON, N.J. - The Maryland women's water polo team dropped a doubleheader to Southern Division rivals Princeton and Bucknell Saturday at Princeton's DeNuzio Pool. The Terps fell to the Tigers 12-1, and they lost to the Bison 15-7.
Princeton dominated the Terps in the first half, taking a 9-0 lead into halftime before sophomore Allison Kuzniar (St. Charles, Ill.) scored the Terps' only goal of the game 48 seconds into the third quarter. The Tigers scored three more times in the period to take a 12-1 lead, and that would be the final score.
Sophomore goalie Marissa Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) had 10 saves and one steal while giving up all 12 Princeton goals. Sophomore Rebecca Kadushin (College Park, Md.) led the Terps with two steals.
The second game started off slow, with no goals until senior Laura Nolan (Towson, Md.) scored 2:08 into the first quarter. The Bison soon took a 2-1 lead, but junior Juli Jordan (Springfield, Va.) tied it up with 2:20 remaining. After Bucknell again scored, senior Meghan Graves (Kennett Square, Pa.) notched her first of three goals with 52 seconds remaining in the period. The score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter.
The Bison began to pull away in the second period, scoring five goals, while the Terps went scoreless. They had an 8-3 lead at halftime. After another Bucknell goal just six seconds into the third quarter, Kuzniar scored her fifth goal of the season with 4:53 remaining in the period. Just 20 seconds later, the Bison struck again, making the score 10-4 until Graves scored her second goal of the game. Bucknell then scored three consecutive goals over the next 2:55 before Nolan notched her second goal of the game with just one second remaining in the period. The score was 13-6 after the third quarter.
The final period saw only three goals, with Graves completing her hat trick with 5:39 remaining, in between two Bison goals. Bucknell won the game 15-7.
Corwin had nine saves and one steal while giving up 10 Bison goals, while freshman Stacy Glantz (Roslyn, N.Y.) saw her first minutes in goal, allowing all five Bucknell goals in the second quarter. Nolan led the Terps with five steals.
The losses dropped the Terps to 0-8 on the season heading into the Southern Division Championships April 17-18 at the Villanova Swim Complex in Villanova, Pa.
